Come Up to My Room preview: get a sneak peek of the Gladstone Hotel’s annual design show

We were lucky enough to get an advance look at some of the work being set up at the Gladstone Hotel for Come Up to My Room. Some of the artists and designers have taken more radical approaches than in previous years, including the erection of huge installation pieces and maybe a little social commentary on the Dollar Store. Shaun Moore and Julie Nicholson’s annual show Radiant Dark has always been one of our can’t-miss exhibits of design month. This year, they switched gears with a new concept and new name: Made at Home. Even the location is new, with the designers taking over the apartment above their Made Boutique on Dundas West. The pair have set up a livable exhibit featuring products commissioned from their favourite designers. We sat down with Moore and Nicholson in their showroom to talk about design month, Radiant Dark and how Made at Home fits into both.

Behind the barricades of the TIFF red carpets are hundreds of fans, autograph collectors and amateur photographers waiting—sometimes for hours—to see celebrities. A star’s arrival sets off a cacophony of screams and flashes. We’ve always wondered who these people are, so we chatted up a few of them to find out what gets them so riled up at the film festival. Family ties abounded last night at the Winter Garden Theatre, where The Way got its North American premiere. Emilio Estevez directed his father, Martin Sheen, in this movie about a father who goes to collect the body of his son. Both were in attendance, as was Emilio’s brother Ramon.

For the past four TIFFs, Alliance Films has left the party organizing to everyone else. Well, not this year. The bash last night at South of Temperance attracted actor Juliette Lewis, former heavyweight champ Lennox Lewis and Being Erica‘s Erin Karpluk.
