Bannock’s rustic, cozy dining room is typically packed at lunchtime, but with summer in full swing, the take-out counter is probably more appealing. Perfect for ducking across the street to Nathan Phillips Square for a quick outdoor lunch, their grab ’n’ go options include classics like Niçoise salad and a black pepper and roast beef sandwich, as well as their signature creation, a stuffed bannock BLT. The Waldorf salad sandwich ($7.97) is our favourite. The creamy chicken salad is loaded with crunchy walnuts, crisp Granny Smith apples, alfalfa sprouts and celery, while a light and flaky house-baked croissant holds it all together without overloading it with carbs (of course, there’s always the butterfat to reckon with). To finish, we treat ourselves to a house-baked butter tart ($3.09): super silky and sweet with a crumbly, butter crust, it’s like a perfect, miniature tarte au sucre.
