Weekly Lunch Pick: the creamy, comforting mac-and-cheese at Hey Meatball

(Image: Andrew Brudz)

From the CNE to Pride, Rodney Bowers’ meatballs have won him followers throughout the city. Since last summer, he’s had a more permanent home to call his own in Little Italy—the lighthearted Hey, Meatball! On the menu, naturally enough: a meatball sandwich, pasta dishes with meatballs and even a mushroom risotto with vegan meatballs. The mac-and-cheese ($12) is a heaping bowl of fusilli noodles in a creamy white cheese sauce with shredded parmesan and bread crumbs, baked to crispy perfection. Perched on top, of course, are three of Bowers’s signature balls made of spiced pork and beef. The already spicy (and juicy) meatball is made even more so with a little of the house-made hot sauces, helpfully labelled “hot” and “hotter.” We elect to cool off between bites with a sweet-and-sour lemon soda ($3) that’s made from real fruit juice.

The cost: $15, all in.

The time: 30 minutes
