Totally Recalled: still more dried basil (including some from Kensington Market shops)

I swear, officer, it’s basil! (Images: CFIA)

The products: unbranded basil from Toronto Cash and Carry (100 g) at 1405 Gerald St., House of  Spice (50 g, 100 g, 200 g) at 190 Augusta Ave. and Iqbal Foods (50 g) at 2 Thorncliffe Park Dr.; bulk basil from Tutti Fruiti Famous Foods at 64 Kensington Ave., Bulk Food Warehouse at 1621 Wilson Ave. and Sugar and Spice at 265 Augusta Ave.

The UPC: 472253100309 (Iqbal Foods), N/A (all others)

Lot codes: mostly sold from March to August (see CFIA alert for more specifics)

The details: Yes, this is getting a little ridiculous. In yet another update to their original alert, the CFIA is warning customers to throw out dried basil products traced back to a Scarborough facility. The culprit: potential salmonella contamination, which may not make the food appear spoiled, but which could cause all sorts of unpleasantness. Luckily, there have been no reported illnesses yet. Those now permanently turned off dried basil can follow Origin and Colborne Lane chef Claudio Aprile’s advice: “Just grow it. Cheaper, tastier, fresher, safer.” [CFIA]
