David Lawrason’s Weekly Wine Pick: a charming Australian shiraz

Weekly Wine PickHardy’s Bankside 2010 Shiraz

$14.95 | Australia | 89 points
This has been kicking around Vintages for several years, and I have not always been a fan. It went very lean and peppery for a while, but this vintage changes course and offers rich fruit and some charm—all the reasons we loved Aussie shiraz in the first place. And it achieves it without being gooey or sweet.

The taste: It has generous sweet, youthful black cherry nose with loads of licorice and gentle cocoa. It is very smooth, easy yet dense with some alcohol heat, chocolate and very fine tannin. It has some sweetness, but it doesn’t get cloying. Very good length.

How to drink it: Chill a little and serve over the next two or three years as a sipping shiraz or matched with casual fare on the grill.
