RIP, Le Gourmand: Toronto’s acclaimed cookiemonger goes out of business

The famous coffee and cookies at Le Gourmand (Image: Pema Hegan)

When the Le Gourmand at Yonge and Eglinton unexpectedly closed down in January, owner Milton Nunes remained optimistic, going so far as to speculate that the chain would be expanding in the near future. Now, with eviction notices posted at the Spadina-Richmond flagship, and the Yonge-Bloor food court locale closed, he’s telling us that the chain has gone out of business. “I was doing what I loved to do,” he says. “Sometimes you make a wrong move, and everything comes crashing down.”

It’s a surprising end to a chain that often experienced winding lineups for its immensely popular baked goods. Nunes didn’t get into specifics as to why the chain went under, but did mention that unfavorable lease agreements were part of the equation, and that despite the efforts of loyal staff, the demise of the Yonge and Eglinton location proved to be an insurmountable drain of resources. “We did everything possible, but it was just slipping right through our hands, and we just couldn’t keep it up, unfortunately.”

sounds like this guy could use some cash – someone a little more business minded should buy his recipes and run their own place.

  • Matthew

That’s terrible. Great food! Will be missed.

  • smAsh

I have lived in the neighbourhood for nearly 5 years, and a le Gourmand coffee was the start to nearly every day.

I am truly distraught as I refuse to drink the swill from Starbucks & Second cup and don’t want to shell out 3$ for an Americano at Dark Horse, nor be given attitude at Spice Safar. Lettieri?? What am I to do.

    PLLLLLEAASSE come back.

definitely a loss when it comes to CDN operated coffee shops…but still they were pretty overpriced on their offerings…

  • Pee

Wow..I could not believed it when I saw the yonge/eg out of business & eviction notice @ Spadina/richmond? Crazy! Loved the coffee, food & the bread pudding was awesome. Was quite overpriced in some offerings though but nevertheless, RIP.

Your comforting soup, lively sandwich and outstanding scones will be missed ;(

why can this city not maintain support for establishments like this… beyond the food, great staff, great atmosphere, great reviews and line-ups out the door? then again.. maybe the question should be,,, how can you run a business with such potential into the ground?

  • Hamilton

Milton abused his staff. Karma lives. Good riddance.

  • bob loblaw

Used to go to the Y&B location for lunch or mid day coffee. Service always marginal. Mostly they didn’t care. Prices for lunch off the charts. If you are going to premium price it, then spare me the indifferent service from stoned / rude / too cool staff. Too bad. I hear the rent at YB was $12k/month. So probably unsustainable from the start.

The cookies were good. And I, too, am now forced to Starbucks it (yelch!) The food was pricey, but the coffee was cheaper and much better than Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Timothy’s, etc. I’ve heared whispers about bad business decisions being the main culprit for the demise, as the queues for the Bloor St store were always long. It’s a terrible shame this ended the way it did.

  • Survivor

Serves him right!! It’s called paying your taxes Milton HAHAHAHAHA….and he did treat the staff horribly!! I’ll miss all those people thogh. :(

  • JC

Only poor businessmen sign unfavourable leases. To blame the landlord is absurd. Nobody held a gun to his head forcing him to pay high rent.

  • bruce

So sad. Best food this side of Victoria and Vancouver. Hope you can come back with a new business model. We’re waiting for you.

  • Am I rich yet?

    Down, but not out.
    We await your resurfacing.

  • L.A. French

I checked out the Yonge-Eglinton location once and found it lacking choice, overpriced and unappealing.

  • didi

Milton is very CHEEEAAAAP that’s what happened to them!!!!!

  • nicki

Why do people say over-priced food? Perhaps it was a fair price for good quality. If you want to pay less, go to Subway and eat nitrates. I’m sad to see them closed. I loved the quiche at Queen & Spadina! And even though there were always line ups, I can’t help but think that Sandwich Box may have taken too much of their lunch business?

  • sue stevens

So sad…i loved the staff, coffee, fabulous cookies and wonderful salads…come back soon!!

  • George

I quite enjoyed the food at he Yonge & Bloor food court. The salman sandwhich was delicious as was the lasagna. I’m sorry to hear about the closure.

  • EricY

So sad, I really liked them. Great food in great locations.

  • Mike

I’m gonna wear a black armband all week at work. I LOVED their goat cheese salad. R.I.P.

  • Nik

Hey, I have an idea. Why don’t all the unhappy ( and I believe them when they say he was a douche to work for) publish the recipies for his cookies and other signature treats?! Couldn’t we all use them?!

  • Ursula

The staffing thing is ALWAYS a headache – you get one good person for 6 crappy n’er do wells. AND everyone always looks like they have potential by the 2nd interview – so the comments about staff aside – the rent is killer @ y&e so best to throw the chips in.The other locations – high rent too, so time to call it a day.

Sounds like the owner is tired – too much to do, crappy staff, and very little return on a superior product.

Get a website, charge to download the recipes and get out to the country and grow your own food.

In five years you will be so glad you did – when all the whiners in the city discover that they are in a much different world of supply chains…..

I am in a state of mourning. Le Gourmand at Queen and Spadina was in my opinion the best place in the city for coffee and weekend brunch. Many of my neighbours are also in mourning. If Le Gourmand reopens, they will have a faithful set of clients who will return and support them. Let’s hope they can get back on their feet again. Otherwise its more Starbucks…

  • oliver

as someone who recently moved into the adjoining minto condo, the position of the le gourmand was perfect as we used it constantly; i’m devastated to learn that they’re now officially gone, although the place has been shuttered up for some months now, so am not surprised. the problem was, whilst a great concept and location, a combination of the lack of service, the lack of an interesteing range of items on the menu, the generally medicre food and the unfriendliness of the staff made the above somewhat inevitable. sadly inevitable as it could have been turned-around and saved, it had built up a lot of goodwill already.

  • stella

I didn’t mind Gourmand but as they are so far from where I live very difficult to be so fond. I agree some of the things I did eat were very good. But I think any smart businessman should not rent beyond your means or open up too many of them especially these days. Even Starbucks has learned their lesson but I like them anyhow. But if Gourmand were to supply to Starbucks pastry it would be better than what they have. I would more expect Timothys to go down before Gourmand. Their coffee is the worst besides Second Cup and Tim Hortons.
I agree that Starbucks is a bit strong but at least when I ask for something I know what I am getting. As well cheaper for regular coffee than Second Cup or Timothys.
I don’t order fancy drinks so I find Starbucks reasonable and an incentive since they are world round I can send coffee cards to friends overseas.
If Gourmand just stayed as a supplier to others I think it would cut their overhead.
I never found anything wrong with their staff that I can remember but I am sure they aren’t any worse than Tim Hortons or Second Cup or even Timothys.
Actually if you like lovely pastry try the east end near Beaches

A new place I have been to as they are new they are open to suggestions so pop by and say hello. I was surprised to find this place only in the area to get some supplies and asked where the nearest coffee was given the answer Tim Hortons and balked so I walked to the corner to the bus and noticed the aroma of real coffee and instantly ran over.
Very nice staff there apparently they have another location sadly in the east end only as I am in the west. But I will come down not just for a clothes shop as this cafe was the friendliest ever and will go back again.

  • Roger

Great big dissapointment. Best Indian food, best lamb, best waldorf salad….and best chefs and service…Bloor and Yonge location…what could ever replace it?..
It was worth every penny I spent there, I was being fed well!

  • Hayden

Interesting development – the shoppe on Richmond and Spadina has a new sign in the window and the place has been straightened up. Check out the pictrure on the door – http://bit.ly/9IWGSf.

    My fingers are crossed.
