Jonathan Black makes his courthouse appearance

Posted on May 13, 2008 by Douglas Bell

Courtroom 111 at Toronto’s Old City Hall at 9 a.m. on a Monday is a scene straight out of Dickens. The room is jammed to the rafters with criminal lawyers, their clients, various levels of legal bureaucracy, overstuffed file folders and other assorted hangers-on (i.e., me). In the midst of this cattle call was the case of Her Majesty vs. Jonathan Black—one of three heirs to what’s left of Lord Black’s fortune. In a short, sharp exchange between the court and young Black’s representative, the case was held over until May 26.

The one detail of note is that the person standing up for Jonathan Black on this occasion was Chris O’Conner. O’Conner is, among other things, employed at the firm of Greenspan, White (yes, that Greenspan) and beau to his Lordship’s only distaff progeny, Alana.

I could reprise the ironies in all this (Steyn vs. Greenspan vs. Amiel), but, dear reader, if you’ve followed me this far, you’ve got it all in one go. One assumes young O’Conner is still squiring Alana and that in all matters—including the criminal bar—love conquers all.

LOL Your post today is among other descriptions, hilarious...terrific....Thread is a good one and thanks for the play by play...:-).

"O’Conner is still squirting Alana"

Surely, surely, you jest.

Barbara_in_BC May 13, 2008 at 9:19 p.m.

Don't be so rude Lit200, Doug Bell said O'Conner was "squiring Alana".

Lit_200 May 14, 2008 at 7:39 a.m.

What's a T between lovers?

Barbara_in_BC May 14, 2008 at 11:22 a.m.

Ah, Lit200, no one could call YOU a romantic.

Fintan May 14, 2008 at 11:23 a.m.

Nice Freudian slip, Lit. Guess you were thinking of the good old days before severe dessication set in ... LOL

You heard it here first: His Lardship's latest autobiography is due out in October, by which time he will have been in the hoosegow for seven months, with about 58 to go.

Read all about it:

http://trurodaily.com/index.cfm?sid=1345...

One of his straw men describes the book as “very honest and very straightforward.” If His Lardship had been honest, whatever about straightforward, he wouldn't be where he is now, karma be praised.

According to the literary agent: "... his client’s Chicago trial is not the intended focus of the book, although it will be addressed." Big of His Lardship to recognise that the Chicago trial, and especially its outcome and consequences, was no mere bagatelle hardly worth mentioning.

Then there's a lovely bit of Canadian understatement: The fact that he is in the slammer is "... a circumstance that will prevent him from participating in the promotion of the book."☹ Ha-ha, and no trips to Bora Bora, either, no visits to the opera ... ☹☹☹

ROFL ☺☺☺

charley May 14, 2008 at 11:37 a.m.

I foresee another Longpen happening coming up for Atwood and Black in October.

Casey May 14, 2008 at 12:03 p.m.

Since when is a felon permitted to profit from writing about his convictions? Have I or am I missing something? as per CB's latest bookstopper due in October...

Casey May 14, 2008 at 12:05 p.m.

correction - typos

Since when is a felon permitted to write about convictions for which he is currently serving time? - as per latest CB DOORstopper.......sorry for errors

leafmold May 14, 2008 at 1:34 p.m.

There seems to be plenty of advance interest in the book - and people are commenting on it already. See the reader comments here. ☺☺☺

jade_lee May 14, 2008 at 1:58 p.m.

Yeah I am sure the same person who bought all his other books will buy this newest one too. Remember all those pet rocks that sold?
Seems to me if the American prison authority is allowed to permit prisoners to publish books from prison, they are far more liberal than the Canadian Laws governing work for profit of convicted people while incarcerated. It's not permitted here in Canada. But good old Con(rad) will figure out of way to divert the funds, perhaps donate all to the war fund of GWB. He is thoughtful according to all those penned letters submitted at his sentencing.

Fintan May 14, 2008 at 2:37 p.m.

The planned title of the book, "The Fight of My Life", is a bit trite, isn't it?

Why not something snappier, like "Showdown with Karma" or "I Fought the Law and Won Silver" or "Destination Bubba"? ☺

I can't see a lot of copies being bought without him having a media empire to promote sales, and it is even more difficult to see publishers from other countries clamouring for translation rights.

The title would translate as "Elämäni taistelu" in Finnish and as "Der Kampf meines Lebens" in German. There is already a book with that title, so it might have to be varied to "Mein Kampf" (My Struggle or My Fight).

Oh, sorry, that title is taken, too.

The book in question was likewise written by an arsehole who never recognised that he was in the wrong.

jade_lee May 14, 2008 at 1:58 p.m.

Lol, jade_lee...and thanks for explanation re felons and writing for profit, etc. Good post.

GravityLevity2 May 14, 2008 at 5:06 p.m.

According to the Toronto Star today, the book is slated for publication in Canada [where Black was not convicted] but not yet in the States [where Black was convicted].
This is perhaps significant with regard to the question of the con's profits.

JONES May 14, 2008 at 8:12 p.m.

I won't be reading any CB account of his pre trial. We already know what happened. He is a convicted felon.Period.

Jeanne May 14, 2008 at 9:33 p.m.

If the book is only to be published in Canada, there will likely be no profits. With our relatively small population, very few Canadian non-fiction books published here and not distributed elsewhere (the US) make any money (unless they are cookbooks, strangely).

Unless Black reveals some really dirty secrets. Now, a book like THAT would make money, even in Canada. What do you think? Will Con(rad) tell us what's inside Lady Black's knickers, for instance? Or what's inside his? If he just intends to drone on about how terrific his pensees have always been, however, hello remainder bin.

Thanks, jade_lee, for Con(rad).

Fintan May 15, 2008 at 1:13 a.m.

It seems a totally deranged poster who shall remain nameless think I'm really one of Jeanne's sock puppets or she's one of mine. That would explain the eleven calls, all made through a robot dialler, and recorded here while I was sleeping soundly early this morning. The caller is quite ballistic at the remarks that "F***ing vermin" like us are making and promises that "you'll be gotten to", "leave Conrad f***ing alone", and so on. Must be a hot night somewhere and someone can't get to sleep. LOL

It's hard to be very exact, but the caller sounds like a woman of 67 or so who speaks in a peculiar mid-Atlantic accent, with overtones of English cut-glass.

What Jeanne wrote in her 9.33 p.m. posts seems to have gotten to the caller. Brilliant post by the way, and it raises the question of whether any of His Lardship's books have ever made money if you discount things like the millions Hollinger paid for FDR's papers and other sources, secretarial assistance, researchers, and so on.

As for Conrad telling us what's inside Morticia's knickers, who could possibly want to know? I guess what matters is that he isn't, and wont be until at least 2013.

Karma be praised. ☺

Fintan May 15, 2008 at 1:16 a.m.

Correction:

Substitute "shrieks" for "speaks". ROFL

It's very amusing to read the bile that "leaf" writes. It must be one of the most extreme cases of obsession in the history of the Internet. The poor thing is totally engrossed with "Fintan", but the latter completely ignores her (or a very effeminate, limp-wrist he?). It would be interesting to know what "leaf" actually wants - assuming, of course, that there is any rationality to be found in that quarter at all. What is the obsession with pedophilia, which no one here mentions except "leaf"? Curioser and curioser, as Alice in Wonderland would have said.

JONES May 15, 2008 at 7:33 a.m.

Are you people still verbal jousting in here? Why not meet and "duke" it out? Anyway I am now convinced Black will be pardoned by Bush in January when Bush leaves office. Where did I read that Clinton pardoned 128 or so people when he left office? Anyway this stcks out in my mind and I just have a feeling the Lard will be pardoned.

Casey May 15, 2008 at 9:09 a.m.

JONES May 15, 2008 at 7:33 a.m.

Clinton pardonned Mark Rich and many others but don't hold your breath in anticipation of the scammer Lord's possibility of a pardon issued by Bush. He has absolutely zero to gain from such an act and anyway, CB is not a US citizen. Moreover, when CB completes his sentence, he will be deported to the UK and never again permitted to renter the US. MY prediction, anyway, re a potential Bush pardon.

leafmold May 15, 2008 at 6:13 a.m.

The answer to your question re the accusations of paedophilia is obvious - leaf is the one who is a confirmed paedophile, in my opinion, and merely projecting onto Fintan this contemptible accusation. leaf is sick, depraved and perverted; it has no life, no friends, and family that apparently has abandonned him/her/it and left this individual to die in a sewer of his/her/it's own creation.

leafmold May 15, 2008 at 11:38 a.m.

Thank you Casey, I tend to agree. As I read back through past threads, it becomes ever clearer that this is a sad loser with a huge streak of meanness running through it. It is also interesting to see that the creature is now seeking to make "common cause" with a Finnish member of the neo-nazi organization Stormfront. Dangerous people to play with. Every leaf falls sooner or later, and none is flameproof. ☺

This is pretty scary - how or where did you access this info? All I can utter is " WOW "!

leafmold May 15, 2008 at 12:25 p.m.

Hi Casey, I found this post made some days ago:

"leaf May 12, 2008 at 2:17 p.m.

hey fickton, speaking of "white nationaists", ... a link to a "white nationaists" site.

"well... i checked it out and found a poster from finland on there. from surka precisely.
he hates pedophiles.
thanks for the link. might be handy after all..."

***

I suppose the poster is a loser who has never and could never achieve anything, but the post shows how potentially dangerous (s)he is. On the other hand, anyone who contacts groups like Stormfront will immediately find themselves the attention of every anti-terrorism and security agency in Europe, North America and elsewhere. I see that the crackpot sneers at the RCMP as "incompetents" in several posts. I wonder is it dumb enough to make the same mistake about Mossad? I hear they don't like nazis, neo- or paleo-

You betcha that Mossad would and could make proverbial minced meat out of leaf. I truly hope that this disturbed poster calling itself leaf is already a target of Mossad, etc. I have also noted how indeed calm and peaceful tgis blog is at the moment when leaf has seemingly chosen to stay away. let's hope that this absence become permanent. And thanks for posting that info above.

Fintan May 15, 2008 at 1:14 p.m.

Oh, Jones, don't be so eager to paint the devil on the wall when you say the Chimp will pardon His Lardship! ☹

I will concede that with the Chimp you never know what he will do. For all we know, God may tell him on one of their little talks that His Lardship should be freed, but I am still convinced that some of the Chimp's advisers retain at least a tenuous grip on reality and will caution him against such a move.

The persons Clinton pardoned were mainly relatively small-time and borderline cases, but His Lardship slashed at the heart of the American dream and economy by undermining the trust that is essential in an economic system that depends so much on investor confidence.

Bush has made a complete cock-up of nearly everything he touched, and why therefore would he want to go into the history books as someone who set such an example: set free a crook who was given a fair trial and found guilty by a jury of decent American citizens? And so soon after the Enron and other scandals of the same nature shook the system to its core? The Republicans would live to regret it when the next mid-term elections came round.

Besides, accepting a pardon is, in the interpretation of the US Supreme Court, an acceptance of guilt. No President has the power to intervene in civil cases, and they will go ahead. If His Lardship accepts a pardon in the extremely unlikely event of his being offered one, he will be a dead carcass floating in the water when his opponents in the civil cases get into a feeding frenzy.

Just as Lieutenant Calley, who was convicted of murdering 22 people in Vietnam but later pardoned by His Lardship's hero Nixon, remains a murderer no matter how popular he is in certain neocon quarters, so too will His Lardship remain a convicted thief. the only difference will be that he will have to wear his shame as he walks among honest citizens on the outside rather than among other criminals where he is now.

During his trial I said many times that six months or so in the hoosegow for him would satisfy me; all that really matters is that he is marked as a criminal for the rest of his life.

Even if the Chimp does pardon him, he will have spent 10-11 months inside. I'll settle for that.

He is a convicted felon. That is something no President can change.

Karma be praised. ☺ ☺ ☺

Casey May 15, 2008 at 1:49 p.m.

Fintan May 15, 2008 at 1:14 p.m.

Excellent analysis. And IF, in the unlikely event that Bush were to grant a pardon to CB, indeed as you claim, this would automatically mean that CB has assumed guiilt/is guilty. CB will never admit that he is guilty of anything, not even his big mouth.

jade_lee May 15, 2008 at 4:07 p.m.

In the matter of CB's punishment, I agree that his being incarcerated longer than 2 years is a big fat waste of tax dollars. I also think that his court matters elsewhere should take up a great deal of his time and money. So in the end he can keep on fighting but he has already lost the battle, his reputation was lost upon the finding of his guilt. No appeal of these findings of fact will convince otherwise. It amuses me when I listen to what his appeal lawyers are saying in public about the appeal, it's a stretch- it's a group of clever men hoping to accomplish what they are paid to do but with little chance of success. The case against CB was compelling!

I was troubled by the comments made about the RCMP and Mossad, both organizations have been questioned in the past with respect to their honesty and we should should continue to scrutinize in the free world the powers of arrest and data collection, the RCMP and the Mossad are not our hired guns.

Casey May 15, 2008 at 4:42 p.m.

jade_lee May 15, 2008 at 4:07 p.m.
" ....the RCMP and the Mossad are not our hired guns. "

Indeed and no one claimed they are. Just making a point, jade_lee.
