Conrad Black’s spirits downgraded from ‘happy’ to ‘healthy’ despite attending prison seminars on American politics

Posted on May 2, 2008 by Douglas Bell

A smattering of news on the Conrad Black front this morning. Last evening, Patrick Fitzgerald et al. responded to Andrew Frey’s pleading that the Hollinger four’s conviction be set aside in a 127-page brief. June 5 has been set as the date for oral arguments before the 7th Circuit with a final decision expected in the fall.

Over at the Globe, Patricia Best reports on a conversation with CBC’s Brian Stewart, who, having visited Black in situ, reports that he has lots of newspapers to read, his own radio and, weirdly I thought, attends prison “seminars” on American politics.

Another curious detail was Stewart’s overall take on Black’s demeanour. When confronted by Best regarding his cocktail-circuit assessment of Black being in “good” spirits, he then downgraded Black’s spirits to “healthy.” That, I suspect, can’t be good.

And across the pond, the mayor presumptive of London, former journo Boris Johnson, who once worked for Black as editor of The Spectator and was among the legions that wrote letters of support to Judge Amy, was once the subject of a blunt two-word summary from Lord Black. On breaking his promise to himself that he wouldn’t run for office from his editor’s chair, Black called him, as repeated in this morning’s First Post, a “duplicitous scoundrel.”

Pot. Kettle. Black.

I bet CB isn't getting much TV time. I can't wait to hear what he thinks of hip hop in the future.

charley May 3, 2008 at 10:09 a.m.

When talking about someone who'd been hit by some misfortune, my aunt used to always mouth the platitude, "Well,at least he has his health....". When this on several ooccasions was followed by that person getting seriously ill or hit by a car said aunt was discouraged from jinxing people by using this phrase!

"I bet CB isn't getting much TV time. I can't wait to hear what he thinks of hip hop in the future."

I wonder why you say that. Although you seem to know something about the prison system, you have never been to Coleman.

"According to Mr. Stewart, Lord Black, who is known to be a voracious reader, has plenty of access to media - six or seven newspapers a day, a personal radio and a communal TV, plus books from the prison library, where he is spending a lot of time."

The man lives in his own head most of the time so it's not as hard on him as it would be for someone with a different style.

And contrary to the GBFA's prediction, BA did not light out for better surroundings but visits her hub every chance she gets.

Not a bad respite from his hectic life until the appeals court clears him of the obstruction charge next month.

jade_lee May 3, 2008 at 12:43 p.m.

I will tell you why I say this Lit.....nobody lives in a bubble in prison. The people around you do invade your space and not always in a good way, Equality of a much more brutal form is alive and kicking in any environment that "cages" people together. As for my never having been to Coleman, do you truly believe that the prison culture differs significantly from place to place? BTW prison libraries are not like libraries in the free world. One does not go and sign out books or comfortably sit reading the latest book reviews. The bottom line is that prisons continue to be dominated by a youth culture in that most people in prison are under the age of 30 and hip hop is the flavour of todays musical preference in prison. I would go as far as saying that CB is experiencing a whole new musical experience with the introduction of several artists he would have never know about had he not ripped off rich shareholders in the United States. As for the communal TV I was only suggesting that he most likely will not be watching the tawkin heads of his preference while in prison on television as it's not likely the viewing choice of those who have far more power than he does behind the walls of that prison.

In response to your comment of "not a bad respite from his hectic life until the appeals court clears him"....are you kidding me? I wouldn't wish such a thing on my worst enemy. CB is currently learning "what is wrong with prisons 101"

It's another beautiful sunny morning with birds singing and the temperature rising towards 20 degrees. The landscape is changing almost from hour to hour as the leaves unfold, flowers pop open and new green shoots spring from the ground everywhere. Later today I'll take my dog for a long walk through the parks and along the Baltic shoreline to admire all the other food for the eyes.

How delightful to be a free man, who can be with my family and talk to them any time I want. Not like the convicted fraudster and denial-master His Lardship, who has been - so deservedly - in the slammer for exactly two calendar months today.

Reading the night's offerings, great insights from Kimmy, the usual nonsense from Lit the true believer and nothing else worth mentioning. LOL

Two months - 61 days - is a long time - I'd hate to be in the hoosegow for even a week - and he still has over 60 months to go. Ouch!

Kimmy, who has actual knowledge of the subject, presents the reality very well. What a contrast to the googled nonsense Lit writes!

It's still early days for Morticia to jump ship. The appeal is still pending and, slim as His Lardship's chances are, she would certainly find it counter-productive to dump him at this point. Remember, she may face civil suits herself, and then His Lardship's financial resources might come in handy. Besides, if they were to split up, the small remaining band of loyal Black supporters would unanimously turn on her. She has always been the real hanger-on, and he has been the biggest (a)mielticket she ever got her hooks into.

Both of them had months to "psyche themselves up" and put a brave face on it before he went into Coleman. The bravado that generated will carry them through for a while.

The real test will come after his appeal is shot down and he and she have to face the reality - around five more long years of being unfree, having to live according to the dictates of others, and with nothing to look forward to and hope for than to be able to live until 2013 and maybe, just maybe, be able to adjust to life as an ex-con without power, money or much respect from the environment. Morticia need only look in the mirror to see her reality.

Karma be praised.

When ficktzl bought his wife, it read “inflatable Barbara” on the box. When he bought his pet, it read “inflatable goat” on the box.

Ficktzl paints spring in a pedestrian style. He keeps reminding us that he is not in the hoosegow. He admits talking to inflatable plastic objects which he considers family.

Every morning, the finn wakes up, adds one more day on the calendar and reports here how many days so far the object of his hatred has been behind bars. He has been doing it for 2 months and he will keep doing it for 5 years.

Meanwhile, the real flesh and blood Barbara A. visits her beloved in captivity, writes about it humorously and tenderly, and fickton reads about it eagerly and hungrily, as karma drips in his hand.

GravityLevity2 May 4, 2008 at 12:43 p.m.

"he has been the biggest (a)mielticket she ever got her hooks into." Questionable assertion.
Amiel's third husband was rich when she married him and is, I think, now richer than Conrad ever was.

Fintan May 4, 2008 at 2:01 p.m.

"Amiel's third husband was rich when she married him and is, I think, now richer than Conrad ever was." - GL 2

Maybe he is now, but was he then? After all, that marriage ended twenty years ago. The really high living with many mansions and all the jet-setting began only after she hooked up with His Lardship. I bet Graham thanks his lucky stars he got rid of her before it was too late.

He might have even been richer than His Lardship in reality, but His Lardship convinced a lot of people that he was a billionaire, when in reality he wasn't. I suspect Morticia was once of the people who exaggerated His Lardship's real financial worth - just as she exaggerated his worth in every other respect as well.

His Lardship and Morticia really deserve each other. LOL

Fintan May 5, 2008 at 2:52 a.m.

Ha, ha, funny to check in and see there's nothing but Jeanne's comment since I switched off last night. Interest in His Lardship is slowly waning as another Monday comes around and he has been where he belongs for nine weeks, 63 days. How time flies! LOL

We've been seeing plenty of "putting a brave face on it" comments from various of His Lardship's small band of faithful, but there's no way anyone can put a positive spin on the reality that he still has 277 weeks to go in --- a prison.

Even if his latest pal to visit him tells us that His Lardship has no palate and doesn't mind the boring food, it's a long way from what he was used to. If he doesn't appreciate good food, why did he employ private chefs at his various mansions? LOL

It may not be a violent place, after all, but it only takes a fraction of a second for someone to lose it - and His Lardship has to live with that reality always in mind.

Then, of course, there's the not insignificant matter of "where's your uncle". Will we soon hear from another of His Lardship's loyalists that he and Morticia no longer found the physical side of their relationship important? LOL

She may have the gold-plated diamond-encrusted dildo, but what has he? I bet he'd be glad of the inflatable sex doll I'm supposed to have. We all saw him on TV demonstrating how to wax a maple leaf. By the time he comes out, he should be really good at waxing his carrot. ROFL

Now it's about 2.45 a.m. in Coleman. I wonder what His Lardship is doing as I prepare to go for a long walk through the beautiful spring landscape. I'm glad I didn't steal millions.

Karma be praised.

Casey: your thoughts on Conrad's downgraded spirits?

My thoughts, such as they are, continue to be that CB is all bluster and bravado and still in complete denial but that it is against everything that he holds dear to ever admit that he is indeed suffering, that prison life is not some brief respite ( as Lit so cavalierly claimed in a recent post ) from a hectic life. And the comments that Fintan made about CB's palate vis a vis the prison food and that if CB had to employ a private chef in his former life, there is no way in hell that he is enjoying prison fare.
I also find it amusing that CB is contributing to Garth's defense. What also made me laugh out loud is Bell's comments that Fast Eddy and HIS big mouth, like CB's, indirectly brought about this criminal prosecution NOW of Drabinsky. Terrific insight and I agree completely.

Casey May 5, 2008 at 7:10 p.m.

laugh out loud is Bell's comments = laugh out loud ARE Bell's comments - apologies for improper grammar

JoeLowe May 5, 2008 at 8:34 p.m.

I would suspect that for Conrad, the first few months will be the easiest. He's got plenty to do to figure out the hierarchy of life in the pen. He'll have frequent and varied visitors (as is currently playing out). As time wears on, the monotony will start to take its toll. Sure Barbara’s putting on a brave face (maybe even surgically attaching it) but let’s be honest, swapping stories with the other ladies in the john while removing their underwire bras will start to get old fast. Her visits too, will become less and less frequent, and that will be tough for Conrad, who truly, I think cares for her. The first real test of Conrad’s mettle will be when something goes off track in the hoosegow. Someone will get shivved, or shanked (Jade Lee, please help with the prison vernacular, its unfamiliar territory) and reality will set in. Prison is dangerous. That’s when he’ll know what a fine mess he’s gotten himself into. His only hope is the appeals, which I don’t think will resolve in his favour.

Ah, the joy of being a free man who can enjoy a good cup of coffee and switch on the computer to browse the night's contributions. JoeLowe gets it right about His Lardship still being carried along on an initial wave of bravado, but there is nothing to give it any extra momentum and every little incident, every little setback erodes that bravado. The failure of his appeal will be the final brake.

Casey, I suggest you just ignore you know who and let it simmer in its own juice and make up even wilder schemes and stories.

JoelLowe: Good comments, very insightful. Black stormed into jail like a person who expected to be there only a short time. The columns are his argument that he is a person who is still in the “real” world. He hectors us about the US election, world politics, and so on, as if anybody actually cares what a jailbird says about life on the outside. Meh.

Life on the inside (tnx jade-lee for the insights) is boring, dangerous, repetitive, lonely, humiliating, degrading, long, sad and most of all…isolated. The prospect of spending six-plus more years in that environment must be settling heavily on Lord Crosstalker’s shoulders. Sure, the little woman, Brian Stewart of CBC, Christie Blatchford, and his great friends at the National Post and MacLeans have stepped up in the early days. But, sadly, when you’re not news anymore, and you don’t get around much anymore, well, who cares what you think and say?

I’m not an advocate of this system that takes people out of society and locks them up, where they learn only how to do more deals the illegal way and how to hate even more. But I enjoy the irony of seeing a man who advocated that miscreants be dealt with so harshly get exactly what he thinks others deserve.

Good morning. I see Jeanne and Casey were the only contributors while I was asleep. I agree with both of you that people shouldn't be banged up for long periods - unles they are like His Lardship, who has spent a lifetime advocating precisely that for other people.

His newspaper columns are, as Jeanne notes, his way of deluding himself that someone gives a crap about him. The absence of any mention of him in the British media is striking.

At least, by the time he gets out and is deported to the UK, most people there will have long forgotten him, so he can tend his rose garden and lead life in his little cottage - probably with Morticia's ashes on the mantlepiece - without anyone hissing "ex-con" at him as he shuffles past. LOL

Here's a writer who seems completely out of touch with reality.
http://www.thehilltimes.ca/members/login...

The comparison with Canadian citizens in Guantanamo and elsewhere in American and Mexican prisons is spurious. They did not renounce their citizenship as "non-competitive", as His Lardship did when he set a karma trap for himself, and then walked right into it.

Attempting to reason with someone as obviously disturbed as leaf is futile, jade_lee. Leaf's latest posting is beyond anything that makes sense - it is blabbering mumbo jumbo and a true reflection of a very sick mind and psyche and unpredictability of this individual ie. dangerous. Which is why we have gone to the trouble to locate leaf's whereabouts, identity, etc. To be sure, this individual is being carefully monitored for any signs of threatening behaviour that could potentially harm regulars to this blog. The second leaf crosses the boundary between senseless drivel and actual threats to others, the " machine " is set in motion as previously indicated. It will be completely and irrevocably out of my hands....

My apologies to the staff of this blog for my outburst that was sensibly deleted above - I blame my angry tirade at my temporary inability to remain above the fray and to have sunk to leaf's despicable level. But truly, something needs to be done to rid this great blog of posters like leaf - it is shameful that leaf is still being permitted to post here and the regulars, at very least as well as Douglas Bell, do not deserve this treatment by some anonymous and very sick individual whose sole aim is to manipulate and ultimately destroy this blog.

“It's appears that you sure like to dish it out but you have a difficult time when people dish it right back at you.” – jello

what I have a difficult time with, jello, is when people like you make gratuitous accusations such as - Here my hypothesis, Leaf is really Doug Bell himself * -without any basis nor explanation.

Such M.O. is unworthy of the upstanding journo you believe you are.

“it is shameful that leaf is still being permitted to post here... and patatee and patatah and blah blah bleeh and blah blah blah…. We have his/her/it number, we know where he/she/it is located and this dispicable individual should know he/she/it is NOT anomynous anymore. Furthermore, the police and/or law enforcemint of varius countries - LOL, that’s right: various - are gathering intelligence to surround this internet terrorist and put an end to his/her/its activities so plastic doll lovers everywhere can sleep in peace. Blow it out your ear!” *

From KC’s laptop: i/we hope that the posters from this blog have enough faith in me and my team of experts to post freely without feeling in danger or concerned for their safety.

I know I talk a lot of smack but really, you can trust me. when I say I invested my owm personal cash (American AND Canadian $) to put together a bunch of incompetent illetarate internet bountyhunters, you can trust me. for security reasons, I can say no more but so far, we know the terrorist leaf is posting from a computer.

As you noticed, I sometimes disappear without warning. That’s because I go undercover. Hehe…
You see, I can not post AND think at the same time so I just disappear for a while and reappear as if nothing happens. Clever, no?

Trust me, with my well invested money and my brainz, something will happen.

" Meh ".....thanks to Jeanne for this appropriate and great expression that just about describes what we think of the above posts.....mumbo jumbo.....

From KC’s laptop: we think we fried our brainz while jogging in the rain with an umbrella that did not cover all of us. Somehow, ligtning struk and err… fried le brainz. All is mumbo jumbo now which gave us the idea to pick up dancing. We’re dancing in the rain.
Dancing in the rain with no brain.
Don’t worry about terrorist threats. Keep on dancing!

Leaf typed with a straight face no doubt:

"what I have a difficult time with, jello, is when people like you make gratuitous accusations such as - Here my hypothesis, Leaf is really Doug Bell himself * -without any basis nor explanation."<<<kettle meet pot

"Such M.O. is unworthy of the upstanding journo you believe you are."<<<<Are you kidding me? I read and contribute to this blog out of pure entertainment. I have nothing to prove here and if accusations without reasonable grounds disturbs you, think of what you type about others here on a continuous basis simply because you can. Somehow I think this lesson has been wasted on you.

But I will tell you this, your heightened sense of superiority in all things cognitive translates loud and clear here. Even a good education can be wasted if the person is a dullard don't you agree? Sorta like CB. (and you perhaps?)

Keep it coming Leaf, I have dealt with far worse than you.

Jade_lee - I find it difficult to believe that you actually responded to the lunatic who typed the above post...? That you would waste even a moment of your time replying to such garbagey drivel and trying to explain your opinions to this crackpot called leaf is simply incredible and rather sad. Oh well.......I have dealt with and seen worse too, I guess...

leaf May 7, 2008 at 5:29 p.m.

Jello, I have explained in about 5000 words my reasons to believe the creep is a pedophile creep so spare me the kettle cliché.
Why don’t you come up with your reasoning for me being Douglas bell?
Why? Because you can’t, that’s why.

Don’t confuse my heightened sense of truth and reality with a sense of superiority. Unlike you, I have not posted using any other alias than leaf. I do not pretend to be who I’m not. I have proved every lie, plagiarism, contradiction I’ve exposed with quotes and links.

I can take it and you know it. the only problem is that you can’t prove or even reason any of your accusations directed at me.

Humble pie, dear?

leaf May 7, 2008 at 5:34 p.m.

KC, are you too blind to see that WE are impersonating you?
