The Globe shines with Khadr coverage

Posted on March 27, 2008 by Douglas Bell

In the Canadian media’s ongoing effort to cover the looking-glass war on terror, yesterday was a banner day. The Globe led with the strange case of Omar Khadr. Kirk Makin was all over the Ottawa Supremes, taking the government’s lawyers to task for essentially consigning Khadr to hell in Guantanamo, then—Pilate like—washing their hands of the entire grim mess.

Meanwhile, Colin Freeze reports on evidence presented in the case of a Brampton youth charged with jihadist crimes while part of the so-called Toronto 18. The group members are referred to laughingly by their defence lawyers as Li’l Qaeda, as inflammatory as the evidence against them is (a beheaded Prime Minister coupled with Guy Fawkes–like attacks on parliament). Freeze takes an admirably afebrile approach to his subjects, maintaining balance and perspective throughout.

The Crown’s factum made clear the motivations behind the alleged plot. But defence lawyers have long suggested all the big talk was more fantasy than reality.

Time will tell.

The Globe is absolutely top drawer in its coverage of this mess—as good or better than the New York Times or The Guardian (kudos to Sean Fine as well for his excellent essay on Khadr’s legal travails this past weekend). Long may it continue.

As someone living away from Canada I appreciate the spotlight Doug Bell shines on these issue, particularly the fate of Omar Khadr. What's wrong with the Harper Government?

But I disagree with the characterization of the murderous plot by the Toronto 18, an Al Qaeda cell, as a harmless sort of Guy Fawkes prank. Febrile means in a fevered state. I thought Freeze's take on the story was admirably cool and professional.

Fintan March 27, 2008 at 4:27 p.m.

What a dim wit lit the twit is: "as a harmless sort of Guy Fawkes prank". It's not often I'm left speechless, even by Lit's stupidity. I know she tends to downplay things, like Conrad Black's theft of millions, for which he was convicted, and probably hundreds of millions, for which he will most likely be brought to account when the civil suits against him begin, as a pretty harmless little oversight by a great man, yadda, yadda, yadda. But Guy Fawkes and a "harmless prank"! Get a grip on yourself, woman! What Guy Fawkes tried to do was blow up a parliament! Even then, that was hardly a prank. Today, blowing up a parliament or attempting it would most likely get you some serious jail time. ROFLMAO @ how dumb some people can be!

Hmm, I make a skit of Dr. Hyde and immediately Mr. Jekyll, the wannabee avenger, makes an appearance, but the post gets deleted. Pity I missed it. Must have been an even bigger bag of odious wind than usual. Killing myself laughing at you, loser. ROFLMAO. Now have a good rant at my recording device if it makes you feel better. LOL. Or call the other number you claimed to have. A lie, of course, but lose yourself in the world of make-believe. What a bag of wind! Haw-haw!

Lit_200 March 27, 2008 at 10:01 p.m.

Fintan, you post messages like a callow teenager. Do you not think I know what Guy Fawkes Day is? For Crissake the farcial plot is more than 400 years old, now. Do you not know how it is celebrated today? Well, if you don't I am not going to enlighten you. How can you be such an insufferable clown? What a complete dweeb you are.

"Oh, I really hit a nerve there!" Crap!

"Oh, I have provoked this one," or "I really insulted that one." You are such an innocuous and transparent piece of nonsense.

jade_lee March 27, 2008 at 11:48 p.m.

It's dweebish to use the word dweeb isn't it?
This case of Omar Khadr reads better than any James Bond plot.
I became interested in his plight starting with the documentary about his brother who was recruited by the CIA. His brother, his name escapes me, was in Guantanamo spying for the CIA. Was he there when his brother Omar was there and did he speak to his brother and about what? This information could be got by a simple phone call to his brother what's his name since the guy does live in Toronto doesn't he?! I want the human version of this story, which might prove to be unedited like the one put out there by complicit govenments who in future will be tagged in shame.

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 2:29 a.m.

Hee-hee-hee. Lit continues to add to my already not inconsiderable vocabulary. Not she has taught me the word "dweeb", as she earlier taught me "cornholed" - you know - what His Lardship is in constant danger of being right now. Of course I'll use it when a suitable context emerges. I wonder would it apply to the son who plays dodgems on city streets?

And I still say: even if it was 400 years ago, trying to blow up a parliament was frowned on as more than just a mere prank way back then. I seem to recall that poor Guy didn't get away with a fine. LOL

By the way, your alter ego leaf constantly refers to me as an old man, but you find me schoolboyish. A lot of funny transformations happen during the hyde-jekyll-hyde toggle transition.

ROFLMAO @ all of your personalities, and your frustration.

Kimmy, interesting take on the case. What kind of brother is that who'd spy for the CIA?

jade_lee March 28, 2008 at 7:55 a.m.

A brother who was young, easily manipulated by the Americans due to his lack of support for what his father was up to with bin laden I suppose. The brother now says that the CIA promised him all kinds of things but never delivered on those promises. He did not respect what the jihadists where doing and now he puts the CIA in that same league.

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 8:09 a.m.

Those "Toronto 18" audio tapes are worrisome and a bit surprising to me. One of the chilling comments by a would-be terrorist leader plainly shows that Canada is not really the enemy. Their target is "The West." I don't think Afghanistan was mentioned in their recorded conversations, nor was the fact that Canada refused to become involved in Iraq [thank you forever, Mr. Chretien]. Those issues were not important to the would-be killers: their "cause" was more fundamental, more historical, more implacable. I have heard all this before, but still, it's surprising to hear it arising in the midst of our "green and pleasant land" as Blake referred to England.

It's obvious that this trial has and is going to increase Islamaphobia. It's very good that the top end of the Canadian media is approaching it, as Doug Bell says, with a cool and steady hand.

----

Fintan, you MUST have a thought somewhere in that noodle of yours about the subject of the thread. Your obsession with me betrays shallowness and your constant descent into insults betrays foolish and unnecessary anger and frustration. For a man with two big degrees, as you constantly remind us (count 'em - one, two) you should be able to do better.

If you think I am a woman and that that is a disgraceful and shameful thing to be, you are entitled to your opinion, although as far as I am concerned it does you no credit. If I were a woman I would be a bit insulted, but other women here seem to have no difficulty with it so, carry on McDuff and do your stuff.

But with all that penetrating intelligence you say you have, why not indulge us with a unique insight into the subject at hand, rather than always sloshing about in that swamp of hatred and despair? Is it really that much fun?

kimmy March 27, 2008 at 11:48 p.m.

"It's dweebish to use the word dweeb isn't it?"

I dunno but you just used it twice in one sentence. I spend a lot of time with kids so I'll ask them what they think of the word and your comment on it and report back to you what they say. The dictionary meaning is "a boring or socially inept person" - which is close to the idea I wanted to express. Mr. Oxford tells me the word is North American in origin, and may be a combination of "dwarf" and "feeble minded" - which seems apropos to the use to which i put it, although I have no idea how tall Mr Fintan is.

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 8:22 a.m.

Yikes! The convicted thief and fraudster is still slinging mud from the hoosegow. Now he launches an attack on Senator Obama that is quite worthy of Dr. Goebbels, whose portrait hangs on the wall of the mansion in Toronto that he will hopefully never see again.

http://www.nysun.com/editorials/showtime...

Note how he refers to "my present confinement" = "while I am in prison" and to the "thousands of messages of good will" he says he has received. No mention of those that tell him he is where he deserves to be, because he stole and was convicted for it. I sent him one like that. The address, as provided by the Nazional Poop, is: cbletters@gmail.com

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 8:34 a.m.

Lit: get a life! LOL By the way, be careful about using phrases like "I spend a lot of time with kids...", because your alter ego leaf might draw all kinds of conclusions and you, like me, could be branded a "child rapist" or whatever the female equivalent of that is. Not that there is anything to indicate that either of us is that way inclined, but what's lack of proof to the nutty aspect of a multiple personality?

By the way, I'm 1.85 m tall and, according to my doctor, exactly the right weight for someone of my age and height. That should make poor leaf drool.

Actually, I'm a bit worried about her - no attempted calls for two nights in a row and not even a feeble attempt at providing proof of her allegations. LOL

Now read the article I linked in the earlier post and get your jollies off reading your Lard and Master's words of wisdom. How did a cleaver guy like that ever end up in the world of Bubba?

ROFLMAO

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 8:52 a.m.

Correction: "clever guy" not "cleaver guy" - typo unintentional.

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 9:24 a.m.

As always, Conrad Black raises important points that bear thinking about but nevertheless leaves me cold with his snide asides and his overall conclusions. However, to give him his due, he does say that American voters have three (eventually to be two) strong candidates from which to choose. And if the either Clinton or Obama win, the people will have a capable president.

I disagree with just about all his comments on the situation in Iraq. It must be difficult to stay au courant in the pokey. I wonder has he heard about the attack on Basra and the rocket attacks on the green zone.

I think he puts the economic situation, and its impact on the election, in clear focus. Personally, I doubt Bernake can keep his juggling act going until November. In other words, I think the market will break before then, the weakened US dollar will sink like a stone and will lose it's distinction as the world's currency of marque. We'll see.

--------

As for Fintan...

But... but... but...

Wasn't it the ABB who cheered and chortled that when Conrad Black was [temporarily] incarcerated that at last he would be silenced and could no longer be able spread his neocon nonsense?

Were you, Fintan, and Casey and Roger... my God! Were you WRONG about that?

Heavens to Betsy!

------

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 9:34 a.m.

Oh get real Lit, dearie! The intelligent reader will bear in mind that this guy can't be as omniscient as he thinks he is; otherwise why is he doing hard time? His ability to manipulate is severely curtailed and even if it is only temporary - 5½ years, say - his imprisonment makes him what he will be until the end of his life - a convicted thief.

Anyway, if he thinks the Iraq war is such a great idea, why doesn't he encourage his sons to join the US Army and do their bit for yadda, yadda, yadda - whatever the sorry war is all about! One of them might benefit from it - better he's a danger to Al Quaeda than to unfortunate citizens on the streets of Toronto when he gets behind the wheel and thinks he's on a dodgems ride.

Like father like son, an anti-social waste of space.

ROFLMAO

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 9:45 a.m.

How did a cleaver guy like Black end up in prison? I dunno. How did Nelson Mandela end up there? How did Gandhi end up there? How did Oscar Wilde end up there? How did Galileo end up in house arrest? How did Levon Ter-Petrosian, Aung SanSuu Kyi and Benazir Bhutto end up in virtual jail?

Because of an unjust justice system?

My, my.

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 9:56 a.m.

Here we go again, I am tempted to say that Fintan is a real Christian and believes in the Old Testament adage that the sins of the fathers must be visited upon their sons and the sons of their sons unto the last syllable of recorded time. I am tempted to descend to his level and to trade insult for insult... biff, bam, bang, buff.

It's too easy. But no, I will hold off. I think I've backed him into the corner again enough for today. He's hunched over, banging the keys off his keyboard and grinding his teeth.

Silly fellow.

jade_lee March 28, 2008 at 11:06 a.m.

somehow I disagree.....

Fintan March 28, 2008 at 11:22 a.m.

No, lit, not you nor anyone else can back me into a corner. But - unlike you - I also have other interests besides your keyboard.

In fact, I'll be away for some time starting early next month. Got to see someone about something in AP. Then you may get away with even more ridiculous nonsense unless Roger rallies and comes back to wipe the floor with you as he so effortlessly did every time. LOL

Then I'll be back to continue mocking His Lardship the jailbird and Morticia the jailbird's wife. And maybe the chip off the old block will give us further entertainment as well.

That is, of course, unless leaf carries out all those threats. ROFLMAO

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 12:19 p.m.

Yes, Fintan, face it. You are so much into a corner that your only rejoinder to the questions of the day is to puff out your chest ... "you nor anyone else can back be into a corner!!!" ... is a bit adolescent and lame, don't you think?

Ah well, go on with it, old boy. I have decided not to be quite so hard on you.

Casey March 28, 2008 at 12:21 p.m.

Guys - stop the bickering and listen for a sec - thanks for warning me about CB's latest garbage - will try not to read it and thus save myself some aggravation this weekend - the man is a snide, insulting, arrogant liar and Fintan is quite correct when he tells like it REALLY is for the old scammer - loudmouth - CB is " confined " to prison ( time for this blowhard to get real ) and no one gives a rat's ass about the goodwill missives - let's hear him talk about all the negative stuff he receives - what a completely unlikeable human being CB is - I cannot think of ONE redeeming characteristic he owns - just wish that he's shut the hell up....

Casey March 28, 2008 at 2:14 p.m.

I caved and read CB's latest missive - well, partially because half way through it, I wanted to hurl a boot at my monitor. The man hasn't a clue about his circumstances - does this idiot really KNOW that he's in prison? I have never seen anyone in so much denial - I think he's nuts, frankly. And if being and remaining in denial helps him come to terms with his sorry and humiliating predicament, then far be it for me to feel any sympathy for this horse's ass.
He simply doesn't get it - " it " being that he is a convicted felon who embezzled millions. What the hell is so " fine " and " civilized " about this anti social " ( as Gravitly/Levity described his persona ) loser OR his present life? He actually expects us on the outside to be fooled by his remarks about life behind bars for him - reading more than he has in years ( I BET he has...lol ) and ummm thinking a lot too...He had better watch his mouth ( or is that his pen ) because prison staff might think he is sucking up to them via his missives sent to outside publications.
Little does he understand that maybe at one time, his take on current events might have mattered - now that he has been branded and proved a liar and convict, not too many care what his opinion is about news, etc. Ok, ok, BA cares but she doesn't count. As if Obama, Clinton, McCain, Bush give a sh-t what CB thinks or says. The man is a loser in every sense of the word and I laughed as I err skimmed his latest offering not the least because it is filled with grammatical errors, opinions that make him look like a pompous jerk who has convinced himself that those on the outside - free people, unlike him - wait impatiently for anything emanating from his anti social - read sociopathic and psychopathic - brain.

charley March 28, 2008 at 2:47 p.m.

Dr Jekyll is the good guy, Mr Hyde the maniac. Afebrile is the opposite of, not a misprint for, febrile. Casey, what's up with the "errs"?

Lit_200 March 28, 2008 at 2:51 p.m.

I don't think I should enter this discussion because it will just earn me more personal epithets but what the hey. Fintan will shortly arrive on the scene and compliment Casey for her insight and clarity of thought.

But wait a minute.

First of all, I don't blame Casey for reading the article. As always, Black is interesting even if you hate what he says. That's why the media will always publish what he says. He's provocative and has a large fund of knowledge to draw upon.

As for Casey being upset because Black doesn't seem to be aware he is in prison, what has that got to do with the price of cheese in Finland? I think it is admirable in a way - Black is dealing with his ill-fortune - at least he's not crying or moaning about an unkind fate, not boring us with his much reduced circumstances.

As for being "branded a liar and a convict" - in what respect has he lied? and what of his appeal?

I am not trying to provoke Casey although it will be taken that way. I am just offering a different (not better) view of the same facts.

Casey March 28, 2008 at 6:23 p.m.

1) and 2). I didn't read - I skimmed...lol. And I'll say the man is provocative! He certainly manages to provoke me into paroxyms of fury...*sigh*. He is in complete denial and I do not attribute this denial or refusal to see that he is in PRISON, behind bars, a convicted felon and will be deported eventually never to be permitted to enter the USA again - to refer to his current situation as a " confinement " is a true understatement - especially coming from someone given to overthetop verbosity. Who does this blowhard think he is fooling? I do not want him to suffer but I also would like to see this blowhard tell the truth about his circumstances and not gloss over them as though they are a minor inconvenience. This is a FAR cry from a courageous attitude and indicates, frankly, as emanating from a fruitcake.
3) Well for starters, he lied about the non competes and you know as well as I do that his appeal will be denied. He also lied about the obstruct justice conviction and again, he will lose his appeal. Wanna bet? A cyber bet...:-).

Casey March 28, 2008 at 6:59 p.m.

" I do not attribute this denial or refusal to see that he is in PRISON, behind bars, a convicted felon and will be deported eventually never to be permitted to enter the USA again " = as anything remotely brave or strong or " taking it like a man "......sorry for not completeing phrase and therefore lack of clarity....

what's AP? athletic pedophiles?

Barbara_in_BC March 28, 2008 at 11:16 p.m.

Oh now I get it, leaf posts her nasties after 5 pm on Friday because she knows the moderator doesn't usually work weekends. She's got a certain level of cunning.

"Dr Jekyll is the good guy, Mr Hyde the maniac."

charley, you'd think everyone knew that but as if more proof were needed, fickton provides us with the obvious limitation of his culture.

he's ignored your remark, as if not meant for him.
he thinks if he says nothing, no one will notice.

now blondie, do you have anybody else's opinion you'd like to share with us?

Fintan March 29, 2008 at 8:53 a.m.

I see leaf is still around, but still no proof to back up her sick accusations. LOL Very worthy of the Black brigade - a liar, coward and bluffer. Put up or shut up. It is scandalous that Toronto Life does not delete posts in which accusations of paedophilia are made, but on the other hand they are obviously the work of a crank.

Meanwhile, His Lardship - no matter what he writes - is a prisoner with no control over his life. And poor Morticia is getting no "conjugal attention", because there is only one person on the planet who could stomach getting the leg over such a hideous old crone. And he is "temporarily confined".

ROFLMAO

Fintan March 29, 2008 at 11:56 a.m.

Dear Mr. Douglas Bell, if you allow leaf to to accuse me of being a paedophile on your blog and ignore your own posting rules, you are a disgrace to journalism. Maybe not in Canada, but anywhere else that standards apply. Now, do the cowardly thing and remove this post too.

Barbara_in_BC March 29, 2008 at 2:32 p.m.

fickton..... you're getting senile. you've already posted the exact whining on another thread.

now what does it matter to you if i label you a pedophile if i'm a liar, coward, bluffer and a crank?

"boo hoo" sobs fickton, "just because i go to india for several weeks without my wife and wax poetic about the coconut shampooed scent of nubile girls dressed in nothing but hula skirts does not make me a pedophile. sniff sniff. drooling over young girls does not make me a pedophile. appreciating the natural beauty of innocent tribal young nymphs bathing in the ganges river does not make me a pedophile. sniff sniff boo hoo. that is not a proof! that is not a proof!"

right fickton. we all do that, all the time, when we go on holiday, solo.
