Photo shoot for Toronto Star–owned magazine results in lion attack, bloody lung
Posted on March 20, 2008 by Douglas Bell
It’s Easter for many of us, and let’s face it: we’re looking for a laugh. In that spirit, I offer the latest in unconscious self-parody from those laughmeisters at the Toronto Star (motto: All the news that’s unintentionally hilarious). Yesterday, in seeking to promote its latest throwaway publication, Desi Life (“the Star’s award-winning bimonthly magazine about the GTA’s South Asian community”), the Star ran a news item accompanied by an ad for the new issue that tells the heartwarming tale of the mag’s latest cover shoot. Apparently—or perhaps, evidently—the photo session was interrupted when a 180-kilogram (397 pounds) lion mauled the subject (one Gitanjali Kolanad, martial arts instructor), breaking four of her ribs, bruising her lung and putting her out of work for a month.
Thestar.com posted a video that shows the entire sequence of the attack and is essentially a primer on liability. The animal trainers haven’t got a clue, and neither does the photographer. After the attack, rather than remove the beast, they allow it to take another run at her—which they included in the video! The whole thing is narrated by the victim in a tone somewhere between chilled shock and abject mortification.
The Star, displaying typical legerdemain, reports that, “It was not an attack, the witnesses said. The lion’s mouth was not open and Kolanad was not scratched. The Bowmanville Zoo had no comment on the incident.”
I bet.
Won’t somebody please take this woman’s case on a contingency basis and sue the newspaper for, say, $100,000,000 for utter negligence? I’m sure Star subscribers would pitch in as a class action.

Unbelievable! I know the people who manage the Star are no geniuses, but this makes Conrad Black look like a great strategist!

I couldn't believe the story when I read it in the Star--its jolly tone, its inviting readers to look into the incident more, its unconvincing attempt to shuffle away from the EMBARRASSMENT of it all.
P.S. warning: do not put yourself in the presence of large animals, especially carnivores, unless you are well trained in dealing with them. And if you find yourself in the presence of even an allegedly friendly and under-control large animal, especially a carnivore, stay alert. Even when such animals are just being playful(as is alleged in the case of this romping big lion), we are not built to be their playmates.

Absolutely - and even more so if the large, dangerous carnivore's name is Conrad Black. One cannot be too careful in the presence of errr tumbling royalty - especially in same space as the lion that is king of the jungle....lol.

Here's some Easter reading for Lit/leaf, that great admirer of V.S. Naipaul, one of the sources of inspiration for her vicious hatred of Muslims. Poor lit/leaf, she really knows how to pick the men she becomes enchanted with: Naipaul and Black, both all-round cads in their different ways.

For what it's worth, I was reading about the living arrangements and general situation as a prisoner of Coleman - Low, and was shocked to learn that prisoners in low security have far less privacy than those in high or medium security. Prisoners in low live in a 10 foot by 8 foot cubicle with often THREE prisoners per cubicle, 6 outside toilets, 12 urinals, etc. and each unit or prisoners comprises approximately 2000 cons.
My bathroom is larger than 8 by 10! I wouldn't last one day in a situation like this and would be off my nut in one day. I cannot even imagine what this must be like for CB - and to look foreward to 6 years of same. I know that I believed that CB should have been sentenced to way more than 6 years but his current sentence, when I actually give it some thought, reads like a horror story. I now think that the prosecutors KNEW about this and why they did not go further in their charges, etc. Disbarment ( CB has his law degree ), 6 years of imprisonment of hell versus his former lifestyle, fines and restitution, freezing of certain assets, the facing of civil lawsuits when he gets out and removal from Hollinger, destroyed reputation were and are sufficient and I am now certain this was the USJD agenda all along. CB's convictions on 4 counts were probably the number of convictions that the prosecutors wanted and expected ( anything over this amount would have been simply the icing on the cake ) so whoever thinks ( including and especially CB himself ), that the USJD was not successful with the Lord of Crosstalkers is probably someone who has gone off the deep end....CB in jail for 6 years in Coleman conditions equals absolute victory for the USJD!
Casey March 21, 2008 at 7:29 a.m.
I also watched a documentary the other evening about Dennis Kozlowski which included an interview with Koslowski. Lest anyone think that this man is NOT broken ( he was crying on camera ) is mistaken. He is imprisoned in upstate New York and for his safety, he is lodged in a tiny cubicle away from other prisoners and as such, cannot have the privilege of using library, participation in any programs that offer diversion, unable to engage in any sports, etc. - essentially, prohibited from all those programs that are part of daily curriculum. To watch him cry was heartrending and if anyone feels that CB got off lightly or will have no problem getting through 6 years of this kind of hell - CB, himself, brazenly bragged that he would not have a problem in prison - must be living on another planet.

Great posts, Casey. I suppose we have to try hard to be compassionate enough to feel sorry for His Lardship. I sometimes do, for a fraction of a second, and then I remember the causes he and Morticia championed and how little they cared about the suffering those causes have brought and are still bringing to millions.
Here's a link to Morticia's latest offering in Toothpaste magazine:'
http://www.macleans.ca/canada/opinions/a...
Reading it, I'm torn between laughing and crying. Can't figure out why she needs one of those wonder-underwired bras anyway, because I have always assumed that silicone gel breast implants were pretty firm and didn't need all that much support. LOL
How lovely to imagine the once so regal (in her own mind) Morticia having to obey the fashion dictates of lowly "ordinary" people. Even funnier to imagine her gnawing away at the bottom of her bra to remove the wire. She should have taken one of her pet rats along. LOL And nowadays she's probably having to pay for her lingerie herself, unlike the good old days when everything just went on the Hollinger account. LSHICSM!
Apart from that, the only point she makes is that there are far too many people incarcerated in the USA. I knew that long ago, but it seems to have escaped her up to now. The only info she gives us about His Lardship is that he has lost weight. No black eyes? Was he sitting uncomfortably as though his rear was sore? Why can't she tell people the things they really want to know? ROFLMAO (that last bit was specially for lit/leaf).
By contrast, far too few white collar criminals like His Lardship are incarcerated, but maybe he is the beginning of a trend. Karma willing, he will be joined by many more of his ilk. Maybe they'll be allowed to wear their own clothes and the new prison uniform will become pinstriped suits.
Off to visit some people now and drink some wine. It's always a pleasure to be at their place, but the drawback is I have to speak Swedish there. Yes, life is full of little hardships for non-achievers like me, who has to do his best to get by in the free world. LOL

Started to watch the video but turned it off.
The Star should be sued but they are probably covered by a signed formal release. To try to pass this terrible incident off as a joke reminds me of the mindset of the GBFA, who in fact, could not resist adding another touch of his indwelling misogynistic humor to the event. What a sick mind!

The exploitation of that beautiful, majestic lion is a crime and removing it, even temporarily, from its natural habitat to be used in advertising photos is really, after all, a disgrace. That the Toronto Star posted this debacle on the net for all the world to see adds salt to this wound. These idiots who were involved in the incident should be ashamed of themselves and by posting this travesty, they demonstrate just how stupd and insensitive they really were and are. Simply pathetic and I should have stated this in my earlier posts above.
ValC March 21, 2008 at 10:13 a.m.
Hi Fintan
Very interesting to see BA's change of opinion regarding convicted criminals. They're now victims of "justice" run amok, rather than the evil-doers, who need strict punishment, that they used to be.
Also I doubt BA would ever say anything that would reflect badly on CB. Therefore, she's not going to say, for example, "he's looking haggard". If the only thing she can say about him is that he has lost weight, we can all fill in the blanks for ourselves.
And I'm thinking good for her, that she is still able to see the funny side of things, while visiting in prison. I have visited in Canadian prisons, but not US ones. They can't be that different. I always found the experience very intimidating. The sound of those big doors shutting as you go through will always stay with me. I think being a prison visitor takes a lot of courage, because it's depressing as hell and very very scary. Going back there, when you know what's going to happen, what you're going to see and experience -- it takes a lot of strength to do that. Big kudos from me to BA.
Casey March 21, 2008 at 11:37 a.m.
I haven't read the Maclean's article yet and I am wondering why I would be interested in how CB is faring or BA's descriptions. Of course we are not going to get the real picture, as ValC points out and anyway, BA must be going crazy from disappearance of her once over the top social life and has taken to now telling the world - as if anyone really cares anymore - how her felon husband is doing in order to fill up her empty, lonely days and nights. I feel no sympathy for her or for her justly imprisoned husband. Don't do the crime and you won't have to do the time.
Casey March 21, 2008 at 11:53 a.m.
Incidentally, as per my Denis Koslowski comments above, he, too, maintains his innocence to this day and he has exhausted all appeals, all having been denied. So CB's protestations of his innocence and false encarceration fall, at least, on my deaf ears. Maybe working on his appeals gives him something to fill the time. Whever I hear or read about his courage and strength of character ad nauseum vis a vis his claims that he never once considered fleeing jurisdiction or putting up an extradition fight and that he would sooner die than commit a felony, the only thing I can muster is a yawn and a snicker. Or that prison isn't stigmatizing ( after all, he claims, look at Martha Stewart ) or that he will simply maybe find prison boring, I have to stifle my disgust.r that he's " not poor, still serviceable ...." yadda, yadda......classic case of total denial.

Barbara_in_BC March 21, 2008 at 1:40 p.m.
" Hey, the lady is a survivor. "
Rather easy to claim this when the lady doesn't have a choice. She is 67 years old, without many or any prospects for a replacement husband should she decide that the wait is not worth it ( her character has proved that she is capable of desertion when / if the going got rough ). Nope, I don't buy the survivor / standing by your man bit - I think she sees dollar bills and someone to fill the potential lonliness of the years ahead - both have pretty much lost their high flying amigos, etc. and essentially have only each other in the long run. BA has nothing to lose by demonstrating survivalist mentality and everything to lose if she does not.So I do not see her as having much choice here.
The description she presents of the wired bra is superfluous at best and dumb at worst - who really cares? The lost weight by CB is not unexpected - I am sure the Lord misses the escargot, etc. I think that she is now shamelessly trying to milk sympathy, pathos and empathy from the public - her every act before the trial and afterward ( same for CB ) has never been executed wothout full cognizance of possible public effect. And finally, she had pretty much burned almost all her bridges, like CB, long ago, and now neither possesses the much needed respect, admiration and friendship of long lost friends.
Lit_200 March 21, 2008 at 5:29 p.m.
The fact is that Barbara Amiel is showing the world how to handle adversity. You soldier on, do your best. And in her case "your best" is very good indeed. She displays forebearance, tolerance, sympathy, insight, writerly talent and humour all in 750 words.
Put 750 words together from most of the posters on this site and what do you get? Spite, hatred, intolerance, vulgarity and misogyny, among other nasty attibutes of humanity.
Barbara Amiel hits a home run and nobody can see it.
Good on her.

The fact is that Barbara Amiel is showing the world how to handle adversity
The world's handling of adversity is doing just fine without BA's help. And she, I would imagine, is the last person to set an example for how to live one's life, make friends, display compassion for those she considers beneath her and generally demonstrate the art of positive living. This laughingstock of femininity and humanity could start with fixing herself before she dares to set an example for others.
Barbara_in_BC March 21, 2008 at 6:01 p.m.
Casey, to begrudge Barbara Amiel her status as a feisty survivor shows a very petty nature on your part. She's lost a lot, but manages to hold on to that mysterious something that keeps her spirits up. (God knows it's not underwire!)
Casey March 21, 2008 at 6:20 p.m.
I came across this while looking for BA news - too funny....lol - Read below.....
" EXCLUSIVE. Birth Pangs has learned that today Barbara Amiel Black will announce that she is knocked up. In a blatant ploy to gain the sympathies of the sentimental, godbothering Merkinsgood people of the jury, Ms Amiel will further reveal that she has viewed an ultrasound of the blob of tissue pre-born baby and has bonded strongly with him.
Asked by a BP correspondent for his reactions, her husband, Lord Black of Crosshairs, on trial for myriad shabby shenanigans, fluffed his feathers and said, ‘I can neither confirm or deny that horribly defamatory and harassing rumour. However, any new heir of mine, er, Babs’s, would be an excellent citizen of the Anglosphere.’
A source* close to Ms Amiel expressed surprise at the news: ‘I can’t imagine her as a mother, ever. She wouldn’t even be one of those women who order a C-section ahead of time — she’d deliver by liposuction.’
Another source speculates that the reason may be that Ms Amiel wants a new sleek, sexy maternity wardrobe.
While we at Birth Pangs realize that there are crazed, desperate women who will do anything to keep their meal-tickets husbands out of prison and/or get some new duds, we strongly believe that these are very frivolous reasons to get pregnant.
Say it ain’t so, Babs. "
JONES March 21, 2008 at 7:04 p.m.
Casey:
I read your post about Black doing his time. That was my thoughts completely. I am anti Black and I am glad he was convicted. I do repeat 5 or 6 years incarcerated even in low minimum security is a bit much. But then again Black has no one to blame but himself. Oh how sweet a Canadian citizenship would be.

To Barbara_in_BC - I don't begrudge BA her " status as a feisty survivor " because she isn't one. She is still the sorry excuse for conspicuous consumption, blatant extravagance, obnoxious opinions and cloying narcissism she has always been - hardly an example of survivalist femininity. Bottom line? She is as phoney as they come and and her public claims notwithstanding, the woman is a shameless example of what happens to someone who loses her self respect ( calling reporters " scum " and " vermin " is unacceptable ) and any residual dignity.

What a crude piece of crap from Ms Binks. I am with Dan from Calgary:
"What's up Georgie? Too much Christmas cheer just before column deadline? Did you have Ms. Mallick ghost-write this?
More importantly, I'd have thought that personal attacks at the crotch level, left or right wing, were the kind of thing you'd expect only on private talk radio, not the CBC. Is nothing below the CBC's standards anymore?
Sorry, Ms. Binks, but from comparing what you write with what Ms. Amiel writes, even with her spouse facing six years in jail, she's already lived a life that's worth dozens of yours, no matter what you do from now on. The quality of this piece proves it."

GravityLevity2 March 22, 2008 at 12:22 a.m.
i browsed the Amiel column in a Chapters. It wasn't a home run. she got to first base with the bra stuf--the posters who said she'd have trouble with her clothes during prison visitis were right! But she got tagged out on second with the subsquent mix of ambivalence on Spitzer, stale apercus on American justice and an anti-Americanism (after all the justice system is one of the three--or if you count capitalism--four pillars of America, and to be thoroughly critical of it is to be somewhat anti-American): an anti-Americanism that does not apologize for or explain her earlier militant anti-anti-Americanism.
Incidentally, the bra trouble wasn't on her first visit surely? Or did Conrad lose a noticeable amount of weight in a short time? If it wasn't her first visit, why did she suddenly decide this one time to wear a wired bra? Or did she wait a long time before the first visit.

BA's apercu, as you put it, is that elements of the state apparatus are out of control, whether it is the FBI or the USDJ - winging off in directions that were never intended under ideas expressed in the US Constitution.
I'll give you that BA may be late coming to this conclusion, and it may have taken the trial and imprisonment of her husband to remove some of the hard right scales from her eyes. She has her weaknesses but she is a very smart person and she knows how to write provocative stuff.
I don't know if she would agree with me that democracy is a wilted flower in the United States. But her writing indicates her thinking is undergoing a sea-change in that direction. The elements of state power: the FBI, USDJ, the CIA, Homeland Security and the ultra-secret offshoots we know nothing about, have recreated a Roman-style praetorian guard, and it is aware of its power.
A praetorian guard can keep even an evil fool like Caligula in power for awhile, or they can execute him and choose another.
Perhaps I am overstating the case - let's see what next November brings - but it's fair to say the United States has gotten itself into a place where the people are, or should be if they have any sense, deathly afraid of their government and its instruments of power.
Thoreau thought it was supposed to be the other way around.
Lit_200 March 22, 2008 at 6:06 a.m.
Who was it said that, with the Patriot Act and the Military Commissions Act, and the ability of the state to spy on its people under Homeland Security, all the elements were in place to transform the United States into a totalitarian state. Somebody smarter than me.

I am completely stymied now and feel compelled to ask the following question -
Although I think that you may be overstating the current climate in the US vis a vis fear of state power and how government power has evolved into a frightening situation that sees this power centralized and concentrated into the hands of a few versus the people it is supposed to serve, I think that what you have stated here is provocative, may indeed have an element of truth to it and is highly intelligent; your post reflects, at least in my opinion, a pretty decent intellect at work here as well as a fine piece of posting. Which is why I am so surprised - how can someone so obviously smart ( you ) still cling so tenaciously and hopelessly to the belief that CB is innocent? It simply does not compute in my head, anyway....*sigh*.
Casey March 22, 2008 at 9:09 a.m.
And by the way, at risk of veering off topic, US domestic policy, certainly under Bush, has become too strong and scary. Isn't Bush what BA and CB refer to as conservatives or neocons? Certainly, with the recent passing of William F. Buckley, who singlehandedly changed both the dynamic as well as the course and force of conservatism in the US since the '50's when he started up " The National Review ", US neoconservatism hopefully may have also had its run.
To put it succinctly, I would rather be a lefy, pinko, liberal any day ( which I am ) to anything that BA and CB espouse. The very neoconservatism they believe in and speak about re the USJD is what produces criminals like CB. They wanted a crack down on thieves - well they should be careful what they wish for, they might just get ( have gotten ) it.

It was an afterthought Casey. The posted article involved a person personally abused by Blacks double standard. The article addressed the issue of Black's Hollinger strategy to clip the wings journalists in the west wanting job security and the ability to write the truth, as they felt the influence of payola. I was just saying......thank gawd the jury did a good job! Do you see the connection? That sometimes poetic justice is the result of a functioning judicial system as well, no matter how complex the matter is.

Thanks for taking time to explain, kimmy. As for CB's email contained in link posted above, I am also certain that the lousy liar and crosstalker is now toadying up to the Coleman staff and Warden, hoping to errr get in their good graces. What a sorry excuse for a real man! Lest anyone believe for a second that CB will stop at nothing in his ongoing - since he was a kid - attempts to kiss the butts of anyone and everyone he deems in positions to help him further his objectives. People such as the following come to mind - Bud McDougald, Jayne Wrightsman and anyone else in Palm Beach society important to his sick agenda, George Bush and John McCain, every Roman Catholic Cardinal, Bishop anywhere who can further his religious aims and in positions to speak positively of him, etc., etc. - the list is endless. Casey March 22, 2008 at 2:11 p.m.
Jailed former newspaper owner Conrad Black said this weekend that he is fine and adjusting to life inside a central Florida prison.
"I am doing fine," Black said in an e-mail to the Canadian Press.
"This is a safe and civilized place and I don't anticipate any difficulty," the 63-year-old Black wrote.
Spoken by a disgraced Lord under heavy anti depressant medication AND in complete self - denial AND a typical comment from a pumped up ego entirely desperate to ensure that, at least in his own mind, the public, the USJD, those who prosecuted him and his detractors never be permitted to see or hear about a CB as less than the fake image he projects of himself - phoney courage, fake indomitable will and false strength of character. Does he have an inkling of how transparent he is?
leaf March 22, 2008 at 2:34 p.m.
Donna, donna, donna… do you have an inkling of how naïve you are?
You know the saying “money talks, bulshiit walks”? sure you do.
Well, it’s like this: failing to keep him out of jail, CB’s lawyers made sure that his stay at Coleman would be as safe and comfy as money can buy.
It’s unfair, I know. You and I could not afford this favored treatment were we to be sent to jail. Just as we can’t afford a real-estate portfolio out of jail.
That’s life baby. Some fight and march on in the face of adversity with everything they’ve got. Others pretend to know the truth and see through the smokescreen.
Prison ain’t enough, is it donna/casey/levity?
CB should be thrown in the hole, without access to email, daylight or visitors.
I know but who says life is fair?

"Hallelujah!!! an Arse-free blog!" - the resident, frustrated, often cornholed stalker. LOL
In your wet dreams, leafie the creepie. Just like when you dream of what you-know-who did to you and lust for someone else to do it again. LOL Must be terrible for you wanting so much to harm/annoy me, and all I do is sneer at you. Haw-haw!
Great posts Casey and excellent link dr. Casey got it right about there being some intelligence locked up in that complex multipolar personality disorder and many-headed hydra that is lit/leaf/cory, etc. Perceptive that the administration of justice is not quite what it should be in the USA and places like Guantanamo where it calls the shots. Does the word "waterboarding" ring a bell?
Only when His Lardship gets his just desserts is there a problem! LOL
Barbara and BC and ValC: His Lardship has only been in the slammer for 19 days - just about 1% of the total time, so it would be difficult to conclude too much from his attempts at bravado. A lot can happen in the remaining 99% of his stretch and maybe he won't be so cocky in a few weeks' or months' time. Especially after his appeal fails. After all, he hasn't really had much time to piss people off as much inside as he was so good at doing in the free world.
Those who are now trying to turn Morticia into a facelifted Mother Teresa should try to see things in perspective. She doesn't really have a lot of options left and His Lardship and his money can still provide a good meal ticket.
She lives in a luxurious mansion, with servants and luxury cars and people to drive her to the slammer. She has plenty of money and no real demands on her time.
Compare her with the wives of many other prisoners. They have kids to try and bring up, feed, clothe and educate. They have menial jobs and difficulty getting the free time and/or money to make the long trek to visit their man, not to speak of the financial plight they find themselves in if the kids are sick. And many of them just had bad luck in the partners they chose. Indeed, many of the incarcerated men are nowhere near as bad as the likes of His Lardship; often they were sucked into crime because of being socially disadvantaged, poorly educated, and so on.
Morticia lived high on the hog thanks to those stolen millions for years and wasted a lot of it trying to look decades younger than she is. Instead of growing old gracefully, she turned herself into the grotesque monstrosity of an undead crone that she is.
I couldn't care less whether she survives or not. The main thing is that she will never again have influence to abuse.
She is not worthy to lick the (undoubtedly cheap) boots of the women from the "little people" classes that she now has to rub shoulders with when she visits her criminal husband.
Karma be praised.

From dr's link:
"Toronto journalists and their readers were oblivious to how much daily journalism in other Canadian cities had suffered because of Black's ownership."
"I bristle when I hear journalists, inevitably from Toronto, speak fondly about Black's brand of journalism.
Court filings prior to his and Radler's incarceration tried to portray them as "kind, decent and generous" men. Those are not the adjectives I would use"
Yes. Exactly. This is the main thing I hate about Radler and Black, and it is what makes me laugh to scorn those who burble on about what a boon they were to print journalism, as if print journalism were only the National Post, The Telegraph, and other "big" papers. Aside perhaps from their intital ventures in Quebec, they cheapened, dumbed-down and homogenized local newspaper coverage wherever they took local roots in Canada.
I suspect Casey is right about Conrad's behaviour in prison. He is probably also attempting some flattering of the top dogs among the prisoners.
Good to know that Conrad has email access, family visits, and some access to the media, through email, and hasn't been subjected to waterboarding, deliberate sleep derprivation, or the sight of symbols of his Catholic faith being threatened with defilement.
The security state has not so throroughly infected the American justice system that Coleman prisoners are denied visitors, cut off from email, and tormented the way that unconvicted suspects, at Guantanamo have been.

My wife goes to Russia 70 times a year. I don’t know what for but she doesn’t have a private jet like morticia.
My wife often vacations with friends and without me but she doesn’t go to bora bora like morticia with his lardship. or maybe she does, i don't know.

Unlike morticia, my wife didn’t get a $60,000 birthday party at ‘la Grenouille’ but she had a better time with me and the dog, than morticia did with her fancy friends.

This is off-topic, but...
Sun-Times woes: Does murdering a paper break any laws?
BusinessWeek
"Erstwhile press baron Conrad M. Black and his sidekick, ex-publisher F. David Radler, now sit behind bars, guilty of looting millions of dollars from the company that owns the Chicago Sun-Times. But at the hard-pressed tabloid, which on their watch perpetrated, fell victim to, and uncovered scandals alike, the duo's real crime may still be unfolding: Does murdering a newspaper break any laws? Sure, a downsized version of the Bright One still comes out every day, and investment banker Lazard may yet find a buyer for it.
But salvation looks dicey for the battered bunch at Sun-Times Media Group (SVN). Between punishing layoffs, a downward spiral in readership and revenue, and management turmoil that has turned STMG into a financial basket case, the paper's future seems anything but bright. STMG's shares dipped so low—the $20 stock shriveled below $1 a share in three years—that the New York Stock Exchange pulled them from floor trading in February.
"They are in such a terrible nosedive that I just don't see how they pull out of it," says Michael Gillis, a 22-year newsroom veteran who left in January. "I hope I'm wrong."
Unless something breaks the paper's way—a deep-pocketed rescuer interested more in influence than in profits, perhaps—it's hard to see how the Sun-Times will be around much past its 61st birthday next year. "

Well, the US penal system as per Coleman, anyway, seems to be ok so this at very least places CB and BA at odds with what is actually going on and proof that both talk out of both sides of their mouths or travel in direction of which way the wind blows on any given day.....they can't have it both ways - either the prosecutors are " Nazi " persecutors or theis system of punishment isn't so bad - which is it?
Casey March 22, 2008 at 6:17 p.m.
This, anyway, is how I view CB's time in prison - buttkissing staff and Warden, on anti depressants during day and sleeping pills at night, brown nosing his bunkmate to remain in his good graces, giving appearance of humility but letting it be known that he is one powerful, rich, influential, smart, educated guy who can maybe help his " buddies " in the clink - aka " Mr. Big or Mr. Wiseguy " to the other prisoners.....anyone here can jump in and add to my little description....but keep in mind that Denis Koslowski told it like it is via his body language and tears, etc. in that sad but informative interview - CB would give his TO mansion, I suspect, to hightail it out of jail.......and yes, I know that I am repeating myself but I really am incensed at his utter disdain for and insulting of my intelligence with his latest email.....
jade_lee March 22, 2008 at 6:38 p.m.
Conrad Black is doing fine in prison, for now. The real punishment comes when his appeal is shot down and it sinks in that he is going nowhere fast. He will be at his lowest when the years go by and he sees many others released, when he realizes what a tiny little man he is compared to what he thought prior to his incarceration. The real truth will not come out until the criminal court matter is complete, only then will people feel they have the right to express what they really feel about his circumstances, only then can all the supports of a crook be exposed for what they are.

The Lord of Crossharbour appears to be holding up well. His enemies have been reduced from many to one: boredom. He is, by his word, safe and secure, much to the chagrin of his sworn enemies on this blog, to whom any suffering would never be enough.
I would like to say something about the Sun Times, a once-great newspaper. There is no question that its downfall can be attributed to the trial and conviction of the top executives at Hollinger. I suppose there is no use suggesting that, had the ruckus over non-competes been handled in the boardroom, rather than in the courts, the ST would still be a great newspaper. Nor is it worth anything to suggest that Hollinger and the ST with it, would still be functioning much as before, had not the subsequent management and former SEC chairman Richard Breeden not drained the company and the paper dry.
But the fact is that the Chicago Sun Times would eventually have had to face the nexus of troubles that now beset it. The facts are that newspaper readership is in steep decline; that print advertising revenues are drying up, that the brightest and the best, who might have been the columnists of the future, are moving away from newspapers and into other media. Many of them, like Doug Bell and David Frum, are moving into the blogosphere, or magazines, or TV, radio and other electronic media. We'll still need, and I know we will have, intrepid souls who sometimes put their very lives on the line to tell us the truth as they see it. But as the months go by, there will be fewer and fewer who send us their truths in the daily newspaper.
I read the plight of the woman from Calgary and her colleagues, who was badly treated by Hollinger when they took over her paper. My heart goes out to her. But the fact is, that is the misery that accompanies historical change. It can't be stopped and it doesn't matter who is in charge, Conrad Black or the most sensitive publisher in the world - if that is not an oxymoron.
And unions cannot hold back the tide of change either. When newspapers when from hot type to offset, thousands upon thousands of typographers lost their jobs almost overnight. Nothing could stop that. Newspapers had to cut and cut and cut costs to keep functioning. And they will have to keep doing that until the last one drops.

Fintan, re your supposition that lit200 and leaf are the same poster - leaf belongs in a errr class by itself - I doubt that he / she is lit200.
Barbara_in_BC - venting about CB actually expends unwanted energy. Kind of like blowing off stale, hot , unwanted carbon dioxide. Moreover, calling him a buttkissing phoney simply calls attention to the fact that I, for one, am not buying his fake bluster and continued pontifications. Next, we will be hearing about what a fine institution he is housed in, how life could be a lot worse and the food, company and diversions are great indeed ......I suppose I will cease laughing at this liar once he has exhausted all appeals and all have been denied. Then, perhaps, 2 years down the road of more of the same for him re his days in Coleman, we might likely finally hear that like Denis Koslowski, he finally gets it.

It has become obvious to me that there is no place for a moderate anti-Black poster on this blog. What with leaf bragging about harassing Fintan, Fintan's announcement that he has bought a handgun, (By the way, I would have thought that Finland's gun control legislation would either prohibit or severely restrict the storage of guns in a residential area. And I don't blame Fintan for wanting to protect himself, but a gun is very scary to me.) and Casey's unrelenting put-downs of anyone who has the tiniest positive comment about CB or BA, and finally, Lit's festival of denial, I have had enough.
My final word is this: In my opinion, Toronto Life does not want to stop leaf from posting here regardless of all his / her abusive and criminal postings. If they had wanted to stop leaf, they would have done so by now.

One local Toronto Newspaper posted a picture of a law student in error and called that student Black's rogue son what's his name.
Looking at that picture, and reading that that person was a model not long ago, I thought, man that guy looks too fat to be a model! He had a chubby face but he could pass as Black's son, I mean I seriously didn't question that he was the son and not some student who happened to have his photo taken.

Fintan March 23, 2008 at 12:42 p.m.
valC, don't give the thuggish leaf (and whoever is behind her) the satisfaction of knowing she has driven you from this blog.
leaf is a coward and a bully, a nobody who gets off on scaring people. She is steeped in malice and the only way she can find meaning to her life is to feel she frightens others. In my view, it is a 90% probability that she is just getting off the only way she knows - by lying, inimidating and trying to scare people.
How sick must a person be to make dozens of calls in the middle of the night in the (vain) hope that she will disturb my sleep? She has not succeeded once, but what if we had small children here, an old, sick parent? Do you think she would care?
That is why I must be prepared for even the tiny eventuality that her venomous malice will drive her to do something drastic. Stranger things have happened. Remember, the teenager who murdered eight people in a school here last November had also begun by making threats on the Internet.
I would be easy for leaf to find out my actual name and address, even if it is not given to her by His Lardship, who knows it, or Morticia. And I cannot bet my life on her being a loser without the funds to travel across the Atlantic.
I am convinced that there is a linkage between leaf and the Blacks. I have never accused anyone of a crime that they have not been convicted of in a court of law, but leaf has accused me - many times - of being a paedophile, not to mention all the things she says about my wife - who is completely uninvolved - and my children.
I make no apologies for my delight that things have gone so badly for the Blacks and will probably get worse. Their immoral and harmful behaviour has offended me for years and they remain unrepentant. The slightest sign of regret for their past behaviour would elicit sympathy on my part, but I won't hold my breath until I see it.
ValC, there are nearly as many guns here as in the United States. I suppose we are a gun-crazy people, but fortunately we are not crazy about killing and gun crime is fairly rare. However, with our history, it is no surprise that there is a handgun in very many homes. And all males are required to serve for at least 8 months' of rigorous military training.
Naturally, you can't leave a gun lying around where the kids can get at it, but there's no reason why someone with no kids in the house can't have it in his desk drawer. Better have a good reason to use it. However, a fruitbar crossing the Atlantic and entering my home uninvited after issuing numerous overt and implicit threats on the Internet would give me a good chance at getting off when the matter was later threshed out in a court of law – even without the two Eddies!
leaf is 90% bluster and clearly has a big thing about getting raped in the arse, which is why I keep on joking about His Lardship getting it up his.

One final thought - IF, as Fintan intimates, that BA and CB or their family or close friends are behind this leaf thing, then what does this say about the 2 people who inspire and encourage someone like leaf? My personal take is that leaf is inspired by it's own twisted demons, perversions ( sexual and otherwise ) and warped psyche and the more anyone on this blog mentions its name, the more leaf returns invigorated. And why it is crucial to ignore leaf.

Thanks for that precise information, Casey. It confirms what I believe I have read earlier: that prisoners have limited access to e-mail, but what they write is censored - as in the case of snail mail as well. All His Lardship's putting-a-brave-face-on-it escapist bluster reminds me of Emperor Hirohito addressing his people on radio after Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been nuked and Japan's military might was in tatters. He told them that the war had developed in a way that was not necessarily to Japan's advantage. And they talk of "British understatement". LOL
If they allowed His Lardship to write columns for the Nazional Poop from prison, they would surely have to allow every prisoner in that category to do the same.
He has had it. The appeal is his last slender chance and after that the one in a zillion prospect of a presidential pardon. And I can't see President O'Bama being willing to outrage public opinion by pardoning a convicted crook who not only helped create the neocon Spuk, but also made bordering-on-racist remarks about the delightful and admirable Mrs. O'Bama's derriere.

oh the ugliness of a leaf in heat! One has to avert one's eyes.

"oh the ugliness of a leaf in heat! One has to avert one's eyes." BMAL!
leaf is so screwed up that she could eat nails and sh1t corkscrews! But why the obsession with me? She has never even seen a picture of me - so I guess I needn't start taking ugly pills. LOL
I was just looking at a video of His Lardship and Morticia walking into the courtroom in Chicago in the run up to his well-deserved comeuppance. I can't figure out why Morticia favours such long stiletto heels. The result is that she leans forward as she walks with a rather jerky gait. I once heard a woman comment as another walked in the same way: "Oh, look, here's me head and me arse is coming"
Now isn't that a something to wait for! Five years for Morticia's arse. I believe His Lardship - the great adapter, as he would have us believe - may find something more callipygian to admire before those 65 months are up.
LOL
P.s. This was for you lit/leaf/cory/morticia

Advice for Fintan:

Thanks Barbara in BC, funny and cute. Good advice too. I really do have my friends close at all times. Isn't it nice to be able to say one has friends? Unlike a certain stalker, loser ...
I saw a really creative T-shirt today. It had a picture of Yoda and the text: "Read you should".
Good night all!

You all have it wrong about Leaf. He is not a woman. Leaf is a man, but a transvestite - cross-dresser. Not a happy camper by any stretch of the imagination. Cunning in his way, violent occasionally and quite a few cans short of a six-pack. But essentially a loser. I suspect cory-privatera is one of leaf's other "personalities". I wouldn't hire leaf as a babysitter, or actually as anything.

Quite a circus in the madhouse today. Best line was from ValC ... my "festival of denial"...
A couple of points - 1)I have never encouraged leaf in his badgering of Fintan; 2) I continue to believe that Conrad Black was unfairly railroaded into jail on trumpted up charges by an out of control USDJ; 3) I believe Conrad Black has strength of character and will weather his time in jail as well, or better, than most men, 4) I believe he has an outside chance of having some of the convictions reversed, especially obstruction of justice and 5)Yes, I am disgusted by those who ENJOY crude fantasies of Black's physical and emotional abuse in jail.
If all of that constitutes a festival of denial... well, bring on the clowns!

As for GBFA's continued abuse of me, and his suppositions about my character, I consider the source and simply ignore him. There's very little of value in his posts anyway and I rarely read them any more: same old, same old, except for an interesteing link or two, now and then.

Conrad is lonely.
Send him a letter!

Not only have I never advocated the slightest physical or emotional abuse towards CB but the abuses themselves towards any human being are disgusting and nauseating. Moreover, I doubt that Fintan really wants to see CB abused and his claims to the contrary are probably said for their shock value and I do not agree with his tactics. You might direct your anger and revulsion towards the one poster here who deserves our complete disgust - leaf - and you COULD begin to demonstrate even the tiniest bit of disgust towards where it truly belongs - again - leaf.

You have also never so much as critized leaf either, for its abuse, as I said above, and by ignoring leaf's sick attacks on Fintan and others, you give tacit approval. So please spare us the continued whining and look at the facts. Those who choose to stay silent are as guilty as leaf.
I am off for more important agendas....

stop! i'm blushing.

Don't mistake attention with love leaf. I don't think there is one person on this blog that takes you seriously and most of us think you are a warped individual in need of help. I myself think you are way beyond help and should only be observed by others in a "this is what a jerk types like" kinda way.
