Jeanne Beker busts out at the Oscars

Posted on February 28, 2008 by Douglas Bell

A couple of sidebar observations on the Canadian Oscar coverage Sunday night:

In her interview with Barbara Walters, Ellen Page pointed out the difference between what is understated and fundamentally decent and what is crass and fundamentally gauche. And while Ms. Page rendered unto Caesar (we all gotta make a living), she proved you don’t necessarily have to wax his laurel while you’re at it.

And what on earth was CTV thinking replacing Tanya Kim on the red carpet with Jeanne Beker? When asked by the always credulous Ben Mulroney what she made of the evening’s happenings, Beker announced, thrusting her unfortunate décolletage into full view, that she “felt very comfortable. I’ve waited my whole life to get here.” This as though her involvement had anything to do with what was going on around her. For navel gazing in a decidedly supporting role, give that woman an Oscar—er, make that a Genie.

Righ you are, Douglas Bell - re Jeanne Beker. I thought she was awful and for what it's worth, Ben Mulroney, while better, looked ridiculous - the hairdo or whatever that was, looked like fake hair / toupee. Ms. Beker was a lousy interviewer / commentator, proved how even Joan and Melissa Rivers are missed and Beker's " girls " could have been better 'er hidden or at least, tastefully " presented ". Beker's shallow non reporting demonstrated why I am glad that I remained with US tv stations covering the Oscars.

One thing you can do is stop posting single grafs of blog entries on the homepage. There is no fold on the Web, Doug.
