Goodbye Black, Hello Spectator

Posted on February 26, 2008 by Douglas Bell

As The Trial of Conrad Black morphs into a blog that might better be titled The Incarceration of Conrad Black (sources for which, let’s face it, could get a little thin on the ground), I’ll be shifting my efforts to a more general blog examining media, business and the business of media. The new blog—titled Spectator and launching today—will have a regular feature called Black Watch, through which will continue this blog’s purview with the promise of a richer offer besides. In reflecting on the course of this blog’s life to date, I have only this to say: keep it coming. Rollicking, raunchy, incisive, intelligent, funny, bad tempered, mean spirited, galling and appalling—just keep it coming. Speech, free and even otherwise, is what separates us from the beasts—and Conrad Black, love him or hate him, is an avatar of same. He gets me up in the morning and incites me (and from the looks of this crowd, every other dog and his dog) to speak. So Keep. It. Coming.

Go to Douglas Bell’s new blog, Spectator.

congratulations to Spectator February 26, 2008 at 6:42 p.m.

Warmest congrats upon new blog - Spectator. Promises to be everything terrific that Black Watch was although happy to see that Black Watch will continue. Keep up the great blogs and hopefully, the mean spritedness and abuse will indeed be diminished.

ROGER February 26, 2008 at 7:11 p.m.

TAKE NOTE, ONE HAS TO REGISTER TO POST ON THE SPECTATOR!

jab3 February 26, 2008 at 7:18 p.m.

one has to regiser to post with the Spectator's blog.

One last thought, on this blog, about Black: several British journalists when Black's legal troubles were really boiling, compared him to the fraudster international businessman Melmotte, a character on Anthony Trollope's The Way We Live Now. I have recently slogged through the book, which is a pretty stodgy pudding; but Melmotte and his business are fascincinating. Indeed if the book were published for the first time right now, Melmotte would probably be declared a fictionalized satire of Black, the correspondences are that close. Of particular interest to the defenders of Black on this blog would be the stacking of the board with complacent "names", with the Executive officers keeping control of the information as to what is really going on; the mystification of business structures and practices as being too esoteric and specialized for ordinary people to understand; the blaming of the whistleblowers and investigators for the company's trouble as the truth begins to get out; and the brazen effrontery and denial of the main businessman covering up his knowledge of guilt and frantic manoeuvers to avoid the public humiliation of being arrested, exposed and convicted.

Further to reference on last thread about Goethe not mentioning the French Revolution in his diaries, similarly Kafka in his copious journal entries 1914-1918,neglected to mention WW1...

Just the Facts February 26, 2008 at 10:38 p.m.

Jab3 - thanks for the book review, sounds like life has imitated art! I will try to get that book.

Goiter & Kafka Silences February 27, 2008 at 12:23 a.m.

Kafka lived in the K und K-- the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as it crumbled, but the official censors were very active. Kafka to my knowledge only wrote fiction and his total lifetime output never approached that of the Renaissance man Goethe. Moreover, Goethe took active positions on many political matters in his lifetime, but on the French Revolution, he remained silent.

Kafka worked in a bank by day. I wonder what Kafka would have thought of Black and the Hollinger and the soap opera?

Susan February 27, 2008 at 1:35 a.m.

Is this blog going to end?

Looks like it February 27, 2008 at 2:06 a.m.

Susan, I believe so. It had to sooner or later, because Black is off to the slammer, his chances in the appeal are almost nonexistent and it will be at least five years before he appears in public again. From now on there will be little interesting news apart from the civil suits and, perhaps, Amielticket's adventures. But why not register for Spectator? I've checked and registration is easy. It should be a more enjoyable environment as well with dangerous criminal types like the stalker leaf (one of Lit's glove puppets) under better control.

jab3 February 27, 2008 at 2:11 a.m.

looks like it says, "Black is off to the slammer".

Really? When? Do we know if the judges have ruled in his, Atkinson's and Boultbee's appeal not to go to jail until the appeal of the guilty verdicts is heard?

Looks like it February 27, 2008 at 3:14 a.m.

jab3, "Black is off to the slammer" is just my forecast, not based on an "breaking news" item. But I'll be extremely surprised if he has his bail bond extended. And even if he does, he'll end up there soon enough anyway.

Fixhist February 27, 2008 at 4:43 a.m.

I'm amazed, How popular Lord of crows-harbour is in USA and Canada.

I wish,I could catch all the good & not so good writers about Conrad Black.

It might come as a handy tool for dusting in media, when all legal leg work is done.

I guess Conrad Black is heading to UK for arranging to donate an ambulance to First Minister for exclusive use at Glasgow Airport.
Could that be possible?

It is too bad that this blog is going to shut-down, but every good thing has to end sometime. I guess the writing is on the wall that the lord is going to be going to jail on March 3rd, just as the rat did yesterday in secrecy. The bail-appeal is going to be denied probably in a couple of days this week. Apparently the lord and the rest of the felons are already packed. A guideline was given to them as to what they can take with them when they go on the long trip to the big house of no return. It must be exciting to be going to the jail-house, in as much as it is a new experience for all three of them. The prison is going to offer new and exciting environment, with new friends to be made. The friends made in jail have a common pattern of being all felons, the 3 felons new peers are felons. All of their new felon friends have id numbers, so they can identify each other as: Hi I'm 18230-494, who are you? I'm 00201-213, Wow your number is much lower than mine, Oh well, I have been here for 20 years.

Snakes On A Plane February 27, 2008 at 8:34 a.m.

To be sung joyfully on March 3 to the rhythm of clanking prison doors:

Being down in the open air
Living life like we just dont care
Just doing what we want to do
Not doing what we supposed to do

It's gonna be
A lovely day
It's gonna be
A lovely day
It's gonna be
A lovely day
It's gonna be
A lovely day

- Apologies to Donavon Frankenreiter, but absolutely none to Lord Black of North of Mudchute.

The creeps February 27, 2008 at 9:48 a.m.

LOL, Snakes On A Plane. I saw that movie on cable TV just a couple of weeks ago and it really gave me the creeps. I hope Lord North of Mudchute is feeling just as freaked when he thinks about some of the one-eyed trouser snakes that he may have to contend with from Monday on.

wave99 February 27, 2008 at 12:30 p.m.

JAB.

I like your posts overall.

But here this.

BOARDS GET STACKED.

It's nothing new. Every major corporation in N.A. is stacked.

Your context for suggesting Black's board was stacked with "complacent" names is oddly misconstrued, even in the advantage of hindsight.

Because you have suggested that Black placed those names there for his own purpose, it is impossible to see that his own purpose was served by now going to jail and having lost his company.

Nor that his purpose was served by having his board placed in a position where they themselves would have criminal charges laid against, had they not sung the Pros song.

More likely...come on....to anyone with common sense and logic, is that the board members,on at least one of the double digit signings per member, knew what they signed off on.

Understood that it was a bonus.

Believed that it was proper and legal.

After all, the convictions simply come down to this.

Who asked for the US NC's first...Black and co or the buyers ?

We know the answer and there rests the case. The board likely could not imagine despite their years of experience that the nuance of who asked would result in this case, the over-zealous, multi purpose prosecution , that transpired.

No, they were not lazy and complacent. They knew.

They were not dupes who signed off on anything. They believed it walked the line but was legal.

They would not place themselves in legal hot water. They had no precendet available to them to reveal it might transpire this way.

Yet ample precedent on how NC's work in Canada and in general.

So, they fine tuned their harmoney with the Pros.

It's as plain as the glasses on your face !

black watcher February 27, 2008 at 1:26 p.m.

er...i don't think the blog is closing down, as some people have noted. i think it's going to be part of the new spectator blog.

Fintan February 27, 2008 at 2:17 p.m.

Now that the endgame is near, I'm back to enjoy the DAY OF KARMAGEDDON in five day's time. Nothing new in the media in the last few hours, except this podcast from Australian radio - an interview with His Lardship's biographer George Tombs, author of Robber Baron. Well worth listening to!

http://mpegmedia.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/c...

Note to the Paedophile Watcher General Lit and her Mister Hyde leaf: one of the persons to whom Black compared himself in his autobiography was a Borgia Pope who had an incestuous relationship with his own daughter! I don't know what to make of it, but I'm sure Lit will!!! LOL

I've registered for Spectator and hope Roger, Barbara in BC and several other of the most rational posters do the same.

Lucrecia February 27, 2008 at 2:38 p.m.

If Conrad compared himself with POpe Alexander Borgia, we should commend him. Pope Alexander Sixth had a beautiful daughter called Lucrecia Borgia. Lucrecia acted as a pope when her father was away chasing women. Lucrecia sat on the throne of st peter's and received delegation from around the world. We find that to have an open relationship with socialite women of Rome is preferable that doing sex in the dark in whore houses. It is false that pope Alexander had sex with Lucrecia, this was alleged to get Lucrecia's first son inherit some of her father's wealth. The boy was an offspring from a young courier visiting Lucrecia in the nunnery. The courier was killed by Caesar Borgia in a fist of rage, since he also loved her sister. Lucrecia was a sweet girl who was discredited in history by the enemies of her father and brother. She was used in the politics of the Borgias to make alliances and expand the papal estates.

Peter Griffiths February 27, 2008 at 3:10 p.m.

"Lucrecia was a sweet girl who was discredited in history by the enemies of her father and brother."

Typical, isn't it? Really great people get framed and then the historians blacken their memory. A sweet girl like Lucretia Borgia, who never really poisoned anyone - no one that didn't deserve it anyway - and then all those other great visionaries like Hitler, Genghis Khan, Pol Pot and, of course, Conrad Black.

leaf February 27, 2008 at 3:19 p.m.

as a rational poster, will you be posting your phone # on Spectator?

jade_lee February 27, 2008 at 3:21 p.m.

How exciting to present us with a new blog the spectator. As Fintan has stated, we all should register but I intend to change my name, why not? It's like a fresh start, sorta like Conrad Black's but different, way different.
Mar 3rd and the entire topic of CB will be fresh and new again. Someone here should write CB in the slammer. I would but I can't, it's against the rules of my employment. It would be interesting to read his replies here (at spectator I suppose). Just an idea.

Fintan February 27, 2008 at 3:33 p.m.

Welcome back, jade_lee, and I hope I recognise you under your new name. I believe I will.

Great idea to write Conrad Black, and a pity you can't because of your employment. But I am a completely free agent, and sent Black an e-mail several weeks ago (address cbletters@gmail.com - as provided by the Nazional Post). I emailed him under my real name and providing my actual address. I made it clear that if he or - more likely Morticia - was behind leaf and that piece of doo-doo's threats, he was welcome to just bring it on!

So far, no reply. He is a coward.

Hitler, Genghis Khan, Pol Pot February 27, 2008 at 3:45 p.m.

don't disgrace our names, we killed collectively hundreds of millions, how many people has black killed...puhhhh leaaassse, this is laughable.

leaf February 27, 2008 at 4:02 p.m.

your actual address has made its way to my yahoo addy. can't tell who sent it or if it's legit but it's being looked into.

Some anti-black haters know no limit to their exhuberance.
Poor black compared to the mass murderes in history. Absured and idiotic. Sweet Lucrecia, one the western world's favorite females. Lucrecia joins the others like Helen of Troy, Cleopatra Vii, Messalina, and the new Maria- -de-Medici, First lady Carla-Bruni-Sarkozy. In North America we are fortunate to have our on home grown leading females Britney, Paris and Lindsay. Truly we live in an exciting time to be contemporaries of this lovely trio.

Hey Fintan, check it out February 27, 2008 at 6:43 p.m.

Leaf has admitted that he/she has a connection to the Blacks:

leaf February 27, 2008 at 4:02 p.m.

Leaf has slipped up with this admission. The only person who could have sent that addy to Leaf is someone who has access to Conrad Black's email account. Therefore, there is definitely a relationship between the Blacks and Leaf.

I thought Leaf was just a wacko. It turns out now that the Blacks are using this pathetic specimen to do their very dirty work. Now that is sick. What is wrong with the Blacks? Stealing a lot of money isn't enough? They also have to stoop to this level?

Twin February 27, 2008 at 7:20 p.m.

It is surprising that the blogger at 6:43 PM was not aware that the pro-black female twins are on contract with the lord. These two have be on the blog 24 hrs/7 days and refute any assertions made against their lord and master. You can confirm this by posting two messages.
the first should with no attack on Con. the second with an attck on Con. Your first post will not ellicit a response from the female twins, yet the seond post is going to have an inmmediate abusive response. Furthermore, the female twins get legal help to compose their reply. This can be proved by the unreconciable content of their idiotic posts when they are not getting help, and the terrific legalistic posts when they are coached. In as much as to thehourly rate they get from their lord and master it should be about the same as thier master wages while in jail.

robald February 27, 2008 at 7:41 p.m.

McCain has admitted yesterday the War in Iraq is like having a 'toilet seat' around his neck. Mccain was using the same words as his pal Conrad. However, McCain while on the 'double talk' express expressed confidence that he is going to get the American people to support his 'policy-of-permanent-war.' "America was born by spilling blood against the English king." Then we used our children's blood against each other in the civil war. Then we engaged in spilling the blood of the native indians. later we bombed with milllions of tonnes of naepal the innocent in Vietnam.
Currently we managed to kill 0ne million iraquies and maimed 200,000 of young Americans filling our hospitals.
My immediate plan as soon as I get hold of the nuclear trigger, I am personally going to pilot the stealth to nuke Iran and kill at least a few millions. Vote for me, because I am a hero.

If that's so, leaf, why not write to Fintan and ask if it'd be OK to drop by for a cup of coffee next time you're in Helsinki?

You can meet the whole family: his wife, his dog - and myself. I'm a German friend who has just taken up residence.

Better not try turning up unannounced, however. There could be a serious misunderstanding in that case.

omar February 28, 2008 at 9:59 a.m.

I enjoyed this blog, too bad it is going to end. I'm not going to post in the new blog: the spectator, but i wish you all bloggers a happy life. For many years I have heard of lord conrad, and i admired his drive, his courage to oppose the liberal party of canada, his anti-trudeau and anti-chreten stand, i liked his international life style. I was sad when he made mistakes and was charged by criminal activity. I was sad that he screwed up his great heritage and business success. But as it is with almost all great men, they endup as losers at the end of their lives. I do not believe that the lord is going to have a comeback, the reason being is that he is unable to confront the truth and admit guilt. Without the latter he cannot move forward as the rat did.

Galen February 28, 2008 at 11:09 a.m.

Most men when under torture admit guilt.Conny has not.Why should he?Adversity creates character. The lifestyle he is about to engage in will make or break him.
Five years will give him enough time to compare the millions he got to the fruit and veggies his Dominion employees were supposed to have taken while working.Come to think of it,did they ever get their pensions.Or was that lumped into the non compete payments?

Bob S February 28, 2008 at 1:14 p.m.

A word of caution to Glock SA.

I see you've taken up residence with the Finn. Be careful how you move around the house. The occupant gets very sensitive when he hears a "clicking" sound and will throw a tantrum when he does. You might even be called "Austrian scum".

Have a word with him when you get a spare moment and suggest he's become a little two faced about all this. I, for one, would be interested in his reaction.

Jimmy February 28, 2008 at 5:29 p.m.

Poor poor conrad, it must be terrible to wait and wait for the bail-appeal court's sentence.I'm sure his 'pro-bono' lawyers are telling him what a good job they done on his behalf. Nevertheless, he is better off than those helpless catholic priests found to be heretic, who under king James Stuart, son of Mary Stuart, had the priests disembowled (removed their bowels) in a public execution attended by the royal family. Surely the lord must be happy that the rights of the royalty have been modified to the extent that conrad's bowels need not ot be removed.

Kelly February 28, 2008 at 7:11 p.m.

Looks like Black has to report to jail on Monday - the appeal to extend bail has been denied. I don't think Black's continuing state of denial is helping him any in these appeal efforts. Still, it's not on his dime, not now anyway. Perhaps that will change once the Delaware court rules on the Sun-times suit to recover legal costs.

Kelly February 28, 2008 at 7:27 p.m.

"How much more empathic one could be if Amiel were to devote herself to working with ebola patients, the poor and indigent."

Now Roger, you know I think you're smart and insightful but I think there's a greater chance of Janet Reno being picked for the cover of Sport Illustrated's Swimsuit issue than Amiel working with the sick, poor and/or downtrodden. Still, hope springs eternal...

*****

Lit's going to need a big bottle of absinthe to be able to cope with the stark reality that Black's indeed going to be incarcerated in just a few days.

I was actually feeling a little uncomfortable at the thought recently and I realized it's not that I sympathize with Black - he made his choices, repeatedly - but I just find it somewhat unsettling that a white collar professional is going to prison. And that is the intended message of the USDOJ after all.

Maxwell February 28, 2008 at 7:35 p.m.

Good-bye Wave,

Apply your common sense and logic-Black is going to jail. His own sense of nuance has helped put him on that path.

You remain content in your naivete that Black did not install his directors as complacent puppets in order to further his agenda as he saw fit.

And it is NOT about the form of the payments-it is about whether or not there should have been payments at all and whether those payments were fraudulent or not.

But...your ears remain deaf. No need to continue. You believe in the righteousness of your opinion and I believe Conrad Black is going to jail. Justice has been served.

Ken February 28, 2008 at 8:01 p.m.

Well, it looks more and more like Lard Black will see the inside of a Florida prison after his latest appeal for bail was denied.

I still won't believe it until it happens.

BTW, what ever happened to securities charges against him in Canada? Our security regulators are so ineffectual that it's like an invitation to rip off shareholders in Canada.

JONES February 28, 2008 at 8:28 p.m.

Well i see justice is going to be served amen brothers. Actually i am happy I was wrong what I posted. I still will feel better when the "thief" is behind bars. Not that i derive a delight in this it is just "Black" gets what he deserves.

JONES February 28, 2008 at 8:30 p.m.

I don't plan to post on the new site not because I am afraid of registering it is just i am sick of all the names and passwords.

Maria Elsa February 28, 2008 at 9:36 p.m.

I never throught conrad would see the inside of a jail house. I still cannot believe that on Monday conrad is going in. I am going to believe it when the Toronto-Star brings the report or CTV shows the picture. Truly the lord tried every trick in book, lately to attach himself to the other two lesser felons in the final bail-appeal. Probably the payoff was that he had to pay the lawyering fees. The bail-court sentence is bad news for mr black, because by sending him to jail and keeping the lesser felons at-large signals that the obstruction appeal is also lost. i don't like to step on people when they are down, the two pro-black female twins on this blog were telling us that the sophisticated appeal judges would be kinder on the big-felon. I argued that the reverse was true and I am affraid that I'm correct. Have we heard of the eddies? Not a peep out of them. How about the pro-black writers surka, styne, worthinless, junos, and professor in crime emeritus dorchevichkxz. I would not be surprised that an "habeas-corpus' emergency stay out of jail appeal is going to be filed on the weekend. The hearculean effort of the overnight appeal is going to stress that once again the wealthy-lord is singled out by the USDJ, and clerks Boulboo and Atkinsun are let at-large. On the other hand these proceedings are having an effect on the lord. i noticed that he stopped commenting at least on the rat going to jail. That is good start. When the 5 years are over, a good lord may surface from the doors of the jail house.

W101 February 28, 2008 at 10:30 p.m.

I don't care about Black. I'm just really happy Jones was wrong.

Barry February 28, 2008 at 10:33 p.m.

The bail-appeal court was unanimous in denying the bail-appeal of black. Furthermore, their denial was based on his chances of winning the appeal in June 2008. The bail-appeal judges found that on the removal of the 13 boxes the appeal is dead. The obstruction charge carries a 78 months jail time, this more than the 60 months kind st eves gave him.
No amount of lawyering can get him to win the appeal. His presiential pardonis a dead issue since hero/criminal bomber and promoter of the 100 years war in Iraq is a total loser, remember Barry Goldwater.

ROGER February 28, 2008 at 11:13 p.m.

LORD BLACK'S DOG IS IN HIDING FROM THE LORD. Amiel has locked herself in her room. Black is tearing the mansion apart.

THE LORD'S WORLD IS FALLING APART ABOUT HIS EARS. His friends are dying off around him. His political cronies are caught in hot, sticky tar. Mulroney is dancing around trying to muddy the waters about his corruption. Harper is caught offering bribes to politicians to vote his way. Blair is in the wilderness. Kissinger is no longer returning his calls. Perle is disgraced and waiting for justice to catch up with him.

AND THEN THERE IS TODAY'S RULING! Poor Black. After a lifetime of dodging responsibility and accountability, it all catches up with him on Monday. It is all downhill from there. Once one spends time in jail, people treat you differently, unless you are a bona fide martyr to a cause--Black is no martyr, just a common thief.

I wonder if Black is going to get tear drop tattoos on his face? Or home made tattoos on his knuckles--dead give away that one is an ex con. Amiel must be worried she is going to lose Black to a man--imagine the indignity of losing him to a man!

Black and Amiel ought to have been enjoying the sunset of their lives, instead of going through this torment. But it is the wages of crime. Somewhere it is written that "Thou shalt no steal." Black never heard this.

Lit200 and Leaf and Wave---time to merge your multiple personalities and visit a therapist on Monday. Take the other supporters with you--you can have a group session.

jab3 February 28, 2008 at 11:16 p.m.

Maria Elsa is probably right about the habeus corpus appeal attempt.

If she is wrong, which of the following do you think Black will do?
a) flee or attempt to flee the US
b) show up by the deadline on Monday
c) show up on Monday, but late
d) make them come to his Florida home on Monday and drag him away
e) something else

My bet would be c), with a) as my second-ranked possibility.

Nancy Lillie February 28, 2008 at 11:36 p.m.

First impressions are so very important. For his own good, please lord black be there on time. If you are late, you start on the wrong foot with wardon and the guards. This will cause you lots of hardship. I don't know why Louis XVI attempted escape comes to mind. Black and Louis XVI body types are very similar. They are both bulky, heavy, hard to move, couch-potato types, so an escape for people with a lack of ability to move is not likely. Also there is the fact that conrad is so arrogant that is blind to reality and believes in that lawyering will save him.

ROGER February 28, 2008 at 11:38 p.m.

BLACK WILL SHOW UP ON TIME ON MONDAY, MEEK AND MILD.

He cannot flee the USA and knows it. He would also forfeit money which is in short supply. Amiel will not allow him to flee and lose that bail money--it is part of her nest egg for the tough times ahead.

Black will not show up late because if he is late, they can punish him quite easily--guards whose schedules are messed up by lowly prisoners can be roughly searched or humiliated in a thousand different ways--Black has been warned by advisors not to annoy the guards.

He won't be dragged away because it would be caught on film and would humiliate him and Amiel. Reports from yesterday says he is keeping a low profile to avoid being photographed going to jail. He is not even responding to emails from his contacts.

Suicide seems an unlikely option.

ROGER February 28, 2008 at 11:41 p.m.

I DO THINK THAT BLACK WILL BE HEAVILY MEDICATED FOR HIS TRIP ON MONDAY

Black will probably also get meds in the prison for his anxiety. Smitherman will supply him with supplies for incontinence.

Sally Anne February 28, 2008 at 11:58 p.m.

Good point, the lord is going to arrive drunk after having consumed his entire french wine collection. At his arrival he is going to be put in the drunk-tank with other overnight drunks, for-gods-sake the smell is awful.

jab3 February 29, 2008 at 12:57 a.m.

But Black was habitually late, apparently throughout his life, including to court, at points when it was not in his interest to tick off the judge. So far he has not shown great ability to think out the consequences of his actions.

If he has a lot of money squirreled away secretly, I wouldn't put it past him to attempt to flee. Unlike Louis XVI, he is not hampered in flight attempts by small children and a wife. Barbara, if she leaves before him, would not be suspected of fleeing, and could openly cross the border.

ROGER February 29, 2008 at 1:15 a.m.

FLEEING TO CANADA OR MEXICO WON'T HELP BLACK. There is no place for Black to run to that he can get to by this point. He would have to be able to catch a flight out of Florida to get away. That is not likely to happen--he would need to charter a flight--which pilot would put his/her career and liberty on the line for Black, not to mention risking confiscation of the plane itself? Canada is completely out of the question--Black signed agreements and Eddie Greenspan provided personal reassurances that there would be no legal fight over extradition back. Best bet would be for Black to lose himself inside America. I doubt Black is tough enough to survive on the run.

As for being late, your argument is convincing, but like Nancy Lillie wrote, it would be unwise to make a bad first impression. They might do a much more thorough search of Black and someone might use a cell phone to film it and leak it on the internet. Or some other nasty retaliation, like putting Black in with a known trouble maker.

Where is Lit 200 and the Leaf? As someone claimed, these two were in the payroll to refute any allegations against the lord. Although, their pay was meager they soldiered on. Apparently the battle is now lost, the blog to change direction, and lady black cut the twins loose. Every penny counts.

LORD BLACK, IN A RAGE OVER THE COURT RULING, IS TONIGHT BEATING LIT AND LEAF. Those poor things. It was impossible to defend the indefensible, yet Black and Amiel expected sweet wine from sour grapes.

Oh yeah and halleluja!!! The DAY OF KARMAGEDDON is nigh!!!

Thanks Roger for your posts. What a delight to read them and imagine the well-deserved indignities that His Lardship will finally suffer. I hope someone gets video footage of him shuffling up to the prison gates, a shrieking Morticia in tow.

By my count, he has only 83 hours of freedom left. I wonder what's going through his mind? Does he still delude himself that there is dignity or style in what is happening to him?

What last desperate ploy will he attempt in a final effort to wriggle out of his destiny? Perhaps "Please let me stay out so's I can go to William F*ckley's funeral."

For a while Jones' pessimism nearly infected me as well and I occasionally feared His Lardship might still have enough rich and powerful friends to save his worthless hide. But maybe this is a kind of beginning and a lot of other crooks and gangsters are going to get their comeuppance as well.

I hope some of you more interesting posters register for the Spectator blog. There will still be material about His Lardship and the horrible Morticia for months and years to come, what with the appeal (no chance of success) and the civil suits against them (they will be cleaned out) and goodness knows what else.

I guess the Nazional Post will have to find itself a new columnist. How appropriate and satisfying that the last thing His Lardship wrote for the rag was the obituary of a fellow-neocon (well, paleocon, actually!)

FINTAN, GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK AT THIS TIME OF CELEBRATION AND JOY!

The Black supporters are stunned tonight. Not only is Lord Black cornered and routed, but their Prime Minister, Steve Harper, a Bush bootlicker, has been caught offering bribes for a vote 3 years ago. In addition, Black's good friend, former scumbag Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, is refusing to testify further before a parliamentary ethics committee probing his taking large amounts of cash in brown paper bags from the principal bagman behind the Helmut Kohl scandal in Germany! Black's world is crumbling on all fronts. Congratulations on your anniversary--raising a glass to a landmark event, while also toasting the jailing of the international thief.

Even in the follow up to this lousy blog Bell can't help his copycat nature, didn't Black have a publication called the Spectator. You are a creep Bell and you have no mind of your own. Black is a victim not a thief, an arrogant peacocking idiot at times Black may have been but he never stole, defrauded or corrupted anything. I hope your new blog fails miserably Doug Bell, because you're a miserable loser. Drop dead all of you, I pray that the ABB burns in hell.

The Chief Appeals Judge the honorable Easterbuuny, ordered conrad to report at 2:00 PM (14:00) at the jail gate on Monday March 3rd, 2008, at the privat correctional centre called Coleman. Coleman is a subsidiary of a Texas owned chain of privat prisons. The prison conglomerat shares has been in the raise because of the efficient manner in which the jails are run. Prisoners must work hard, with long hours, and very very low pay. If a prisoner miss-behaves, his sentence is extended by one week for every miss-conduct.
The reputation of Coleman is such that it is called the American Gulag of Florida. Mr Black's business practices will apply to him this time. Conrad to welcome hard work, long hours and low pay. In some instance corporal punishment is applied, such as caning to prisoners who can't get it. The bail-appeals court explained in its ruling that the weakness of conrads appeal viz a viz the videotaped removal after hours of the 13 boxes with increminating documents from his office by himself and his driver have NO chance of success in the June appeal. since this crime of obstruction goes with 78 months of jail time, the jail sentence of conrad is going to be extended, rather than reduced by the appeals court in june 2008. Hopefully conrad is to report on time at 2:00 PM sharp, else he'll get an extra two weeks added to the six year jail time. Friends of the lord claim that he is arrogant but good. Lets accept this premise. So first he has to become 'humble.' In jail the gurads are going to make him humble pronto. When he is humble, he is going to admit that he has stolen stuff. This then is the first step to his rehabilitation. We wish him well in this endevor. To my surprise the only Canadian newspaper to have a front page article on the bail denial was the National Post. This means that conrad is no longer newsworthy. We feel his pain.

jab3 February 29, 2008 at 1:35 p.m.

"since this crime of obstruction goes with 78 months of jail time, the jail sentence of conrad is going to be extended, rather than reduced by the appeals court in june 2008."
Uh, no--78 months was his original sentence, wasn't it--6 1/2 years? The sentences for his various crimes were running concurrently, not consecutively. Incidently, the judges also found that one of the 3 non-compete convictions, for which Conrad also received a big chunk of time, was not at all likely to be reversed on appeal. Hoever, Atkinson and Boultbee received less time than Conrad for this conviction, and if they went to jail now, and the other two convictions were eventually reversed through the appeal process, they could end up spending more time in jail than the original sentence for the conviction that remained intact.

I am waiting to read what Lit 200 has to say about all this.
There was a commentator named Joan something on CTV last night saying that Conrad is the eternal optimist, blah, blah blah. I think he has just had a huge reality check and that he is sad, and really shocked and infuriated that Atkinson and Boultbee get a stay out of jail card and he doesn't.

Some posters on this blog suspected that the reason for bundling the appeals for bail continuance all together was that the lawyers realized that Boultbee and Atkinson, with their shorter sentences and lack of the obstruction conviction had a better chance of staying out of jail than Black, and Black's lawyers thought that by bundling all three appeals together, they could get one by the judges and get Black a continuance of bail too.

In hind-sight, the lord's plans to fill his public company board with very prominent people backfired when trouble started. This happened because the prominent board members are like 'big-fish' and they swallow the 'small-fish'. Conrad was the small-fish and he got swallowed by the big-fish and the blaiming game started. Anything that can go wrong went wrong for the lord. Fooled again.

Maxwell.Peter...whoever you are...

What is naive is to think , as you do, that Black or any CEO, WOULD NOT attempt to stack a board with players who favour the 'captain's' approach.

These guys create business from their own ingenuity and are hard to accept that they have to give up some power when going public.

But they buy into that trade off and try to have Board members who share their political ,philosophical or business approach.

Very easy to understand.

But in the tug of war that goes on in these business empires btwn a CEO's instinct to growand push the envelope with the Board's guard at ensuring stability and stock holder interests, Black's board evaluated the scenarios presented and agreed to that direction of action.

THEY are the checks and ballances. THEY understood. Naive...incredibly naive,to think otherwise.

And most CEO's simply want their Board's to pull in the reigns when the excitement and anticipation of an idea develops to an applied policy objective.

Lastly, sometime in the summer of '03 or possibly '04 I read a Fortune 500 article on what it means for creative and really bright people to hand over most of the decision making authority to a Board ,WHEN TURNING PUBLIC.

It's interesting the extent that those CEO's stop the detail overviews of areas that walk a fine line, as they have begun to train themselves to create the scenarios but hand over the decisive conclusions to their Boards.

And in the present day sense, it challenges all of us who have any interest in this case, to discuss what exactly is the function of a Board.

There are plenty of legal examples within the last 7 years which completely contradict each other, emphasizing different degrees of responsibility on Board's vs CEO/Management.

It appears even declarations of responsibilities on newly est Board's do not necessarily result in a Board actually being responsible !

Anyone else see a problem with that?

Mind you...perhaps these newly established Board members did not read fully those declarations !

Ahhh....the key to self survival...pretend you know enough to get on the Board, but at that point, read and know nothing.

Kind of like Roger.

Conrad living in style, like the aristocracy prior to the revolution. The lord gave a huge gala party at the Palm Beach home, guest came from Toronto and the Bahamas. Allegedly the lord is in good spirit and the only change is that he has gain weight (he is fater) He was allegedly dressed as a cardinal and his wife as Marie-Antoinette. The lord completed writing his book about "his ordeal" to appear soon in the book stores. His appeal lawyer claims that there are 'strong grounds' to overturn the conviction."
This is the bunker-in-berlin frame of mind fed to him by lawyers wanting the legal fees to continue running. As chief judge Easterbunny stated the obstruction appeal is weak, and thus he is keeping the lord in jail starting Monday at 2 PM EST. A number of tricoteuses, dressed as groopies are lining up at the Coleman jail gates. They are waiting for the ax to fall and clamoring off with his head.
The scene is pathetic, reminescing the martyrdom of nero incable to fall on his sword. The lord repeating over and over his innocence, his chariable works, his persecution because of his wealth and status; "what a great man the world is losing".

ROGER February 29, 2008 at 4:19 p.m.

WAVE/LEAF/LIT, LET IT ALL OUT. Let the bitterness out and set yourself free from the sickness that was Black. It is over. Black is now fully exposed for all to see. Black's decades of crime has caught up with him. The grotesque monster has been belled and will soon be in shackles, behind bars, making the world a safer place. Perhaps some enterprising prosecutor will move for application of the three strikes law. Afterall, Black has 4 convictions!

Soon those civil suits will start. In any situation where it is Black's word against someone else's, Black is a convicted criminal serving time in jail. His word is worth nothing now. Together with Chicago court decisions, the Delaware decisions of Vice-chancellor Justice Strine, and the earlier Justice Manos decision involving Hanna/Norcen Mining from the 1980s, Black and Amiel and Co. might as well hand over everything they own to the authorities because they are done. Black at least has a place to stay and the taxpayers now have to feed and clothe him. Poor Amiel has no such security. So please be generous when you see her on a street corner asking for change. She must be so thankful that debtor prisons no longer exist, nor poor houses for that matter.

Amiel ought to go to India and join the Mother Theresa nunnery. She ought to take Lit and Leaf and Wave with her. Maybe they can set up a vestal virgin wing? Leaf could stalk customers. Wave could talk to them til they plead to be set free, willing to pay any fee to escape. Lit can handle the unusual clientele. Amiel can be the star attraction--she has a vague resemblance to Sonja Gandhi--I hope Ms Gandhi is not too offended by my suggestion!

I hope Black's new home is safe from hurricanes. I am relieved he did not choose New Orleans. Personally, I would never choose to be imprisoned anywhere, but if I had to choose, I would never choose a southern tropical place.

Queen Connie of Florida February 29, 2008 at 4:21 p.m.

I can't wait for Black's National Post prisoner's diary to appear, complete with pics of him and his new prison buddies. I just hope they don't show too much amorous kissing! Father D'Sousa would be so jealous! Not to mention Amiel! I wonder if they are going to allow Black to wear his gown lined with faux ermine inside the jail? It would look good with a beauty queen tiara on top and a pair of pumps!

Apparently because of the crowded facilities at Coleman, housing 20,000 inmates, the lord will be placed in dorm-style situation where bunk beds are stacked up 3 spaces high and the bathroom facilities are shared with 150 inmates. The activity on a 10 work day will be peeling potatoes, cleaning toilets, generally doing dishwork at a 15 cents per hour payroll. If the lord works 10 hours per day, he can take home $1.50/day. The food is mainly starch and spagetti, this diet is going to make the lord gain more weight and make him more bloated. The facility is bordered by two rows of razer shap bob wire, patrolled by armed guards. If the lord is lucky he could stay at Coleman, but as an alien, he may be placed in a medium security jail for fear of the lord escaping. The hot tropical climate of Florida is horrible in the summer, spring and fall. The climate permits the abundance of bugs, flease, and other crippy crawlly insects. With no air conditioning at Coleman, except for the wardon and his guards, the lord's
stay is going to be awful. Why pick Florida?

Conrad's manuscript "his ordeal" to be on the market as he enters jail, contains vitriolic attacks one everyone associated with the trial as allegedly reported by insiders who have attended the plush Palm Beach party in recent days. Once again this maybe a bad move for someone entering the big-house, coz retaliation may ensue. In one of the papers I have read that the lord's wife went on a shoping tour in Florida spending $250K.I hope this info is false. Where would she get $250K? If she does have it, why spend so much? This is insane and beyond me. It breaks my heart and probably the heart of many bloggers on Mr Bell's web- page, to learn that the pro-black twins were not invited to the lord's Palm Beach party recently. These find pro-black bloggers have been putting-up with insults to no end defending the Hollinger baron and baroness, yet the lack of gratitud towards these two staffers knows no limit by leaving them out of their selected list. Shame on the lord. Long live the pro-black twins. Some anti-black female bloggers are setting a small sum of money to arrange for a meal at McDonald's for the pro-black twins to relieve their distress having their master going to the big-houise at 2PM on Monday.

LOL! See the bitterness of the sore losers. Feel their anguish and pain. Defeated and forlorn, they taste the bitter pill of lost hope, shattered dreams and scattered forces, betrayed by their own erstwhile friends and patrons, there is no solace in cameraderie. Leaderless and despondent, they each suffer alone. Jeered, heckled and derided, they find no sympathetic voice, no consolation that better times are ahead. They now know that history will judge them and their lord and lady very harshly. The legacy will be one of notoriety. The indelible stain of a criminal conviction for petty thievery sticks like a laurel of toilet seats about the necks of m'lord and m'lady. The rot at the core of the criminal enterprise that was Black's career now exposed for all eternity. The epitaph has been written. The die is caste. All those who championed the lord and lady are now splattered and tainted, stained in the footnotes to history. There will be no speech by any Marc Antony, no requiem, no rehabilitation. No matter the merits of Black the historian, this truth he knows to be eternally true--he is finished, not only for this time, but for all time. The only outstanding item is to now trace the links between Black and the scoundrels in the current and previous governments. Hopefully, Black will pull a Schreiber and spill the beans sooner rather than later.

Thank the stars that Jean Chretien had the foresight to convince Black that Britain was where he belonged instead of Canada!

It is fitting that a wake was held in Palm Beach for Black. He is indeed passing on the the otherside. No doubt the eulogies were muted. If it was a fancy dress wake, everyone would have attended suitable dressed for a funeral, with some more adventurous types opting for clothes from the times of the Plague, the Cholera, the Black death. This time around, Black dressed as Charles II, and Amiel as Anne Boleyn. Black bought an authentic guillotine from the French Revolution especially for the wake and it was used to shave the slices of roast beef for the guests. Noteworthy is the fact that neither Leaf nor Lit nor Wave were invited to the orgy wake. The Blacks did not invited the hired help.

The distance from Palm Beach Fl. to Coleman Fl. is 220 miles. The approx. time to drive non-stop is three and one half hours. The lord need to leave his mortgaged house by 10.30 AM. However, it is most certain that the lord is going to stop to have lunch, his last lunch date in freedom, at some fancy diner. To schedule time for lunch, the trip is goingto take approx. five hours. The lord must leave Palm Beach by 9:00AM to get there on time. Then again, there is always the unexpected, a flat tire, and overheated radiator, a traffic accident on the highway, delays because of heavy traffic, and so on. Clearly, to be absolutely conservative the lord should leave his home by 8:00 AM. What auto is the lord going to travel with. He may use his favorite white Rolls-Royce, with purpule seat fabrics. This will make the lord arrive in style. Who is going to be driving? His driver, who helped move the 13 boxes, his wife, who spent $250K last week, his daughter, eddie, the appeal lawyer, or the lord himself. Lots of questions to be addressed.

Sunday morning here in Helsinki and just after 2 a.m in Palm Beach, so Morticia and her felon husband are still awake if this article is to be believed:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/wo......

It's nice of His Lardship's friend Brian Steward to be so brave about it and opine that he will cope well with prison, whereas Morticia will suffer. But what would Mr. Steward know about the reality that His Lardship is entering?

What a tiresome and stupid woman! As the article concludes "It remains unclear how Amiel will support herself. She is, like her husband, considering writing a book about their “persecution by jealous people”.

How many people would buy a book like that? Lit/leaf perhaps - that's one copy. What with civil suits pending against her, too, she may soon have to have a garage sale and maybe hock the diamond.

Meanwhile back at the ranch (in the UK), being in any way associated with His Lardship is now a definite liability.

"Labour yesterday revealed growing anxiety that Boris Johnson could win the London mayoralty when its local election coordinator, Hazel Blears, condemned the Tory candidate as a nasty rightwing elitist with odious views and criminal friends like Conrad Black."

No-one is happy to learn that the lord is going to coleman. In fact many are sorry to face the fact that our lives are going to be poorer without Mr Bell's blog. But every good thing has to end at some point. The only sure thing in life are income-taxes and death. As human beings we are programmed to last a limited time of this planet. Our cells' dna tells them to selfdestruct, only cancer cells could live indefinitively. Those people in the business of religion, have been trying to sell us the concept that if we contribute to their coffers, we are assured to have eternal life. What a horrible thing, to live forever. I am already bored having lived a few decades. Just think having the two pro-black females around forever. So we should rejoice on the temporary nature of our existance on earth. After nature calls, we exist no-longer, but as simple atoms populating the universe. When we look at the night sky and observe the planets and the stars, we realize the insignificance of our existance, and question the folley of the arrogant people. Let's be humble and make the best of it. We are condemed not to know the reason for life. Should we know why we live, we would also know the future, but no-one knows the future since we don't know the reason for life.

Psychologists tell us that a man in the company of a beautiful woman improves his own looks. Well, it doesn't seem to work always. For example in her first visit the first lady of France, Carla is attrating all the attention of photographers when with the horny-toad. The cameras are attracted to her beauty, just as it was the case with Lady Die and mother-boy charles. To make things worse, when visiting a hospital in Cape Horn, while cardinal Tutu was lecturing the horny-toad, beautiful carla distarcted her husband's attention and they started laughing and hugging. Needless to say Tutu the self appointed savior of the black race was shocked, both his nostrils expanded to the point of lodging a tse-tse fly. Caos ensued. Fortunately, Nelson Mandela was around and Nelson gave a copy of the key of his jail cubicle to beautiful Carla. Nelson was smitten by Carla's character, and promised to listen to all her albums. The tiny-frog, only got a piece of rock from the quarry where Nelson laboured for 52 years prior to his release engineered by the American Obamba. Carla spoke a few words stating that she is going to devote herself to charity-works, like Lady Die before her. Her words were translated in to 89 languages and reported around the globe. As the chinese saying goes: "beware of getting what you wish for." Carla is going to hang around sarkozy's neack as a toilet seat, making him even more more rude, uneducated, unfit for office and more miniscule.

Please pro-black individuals explain this to us, the national post reports that it is not known how conrad's wife is going to make a living coz she is out of funds. Yet on the other hand, we learn that conrad's wife has spent $250,000 dollars in a shopping tour last week.

Conrad has allegedly instructed his accountant still at-large Boultboo to make a donation to war-hero McCoin, because the lord is expecting a pardon-pronto after the hero's victory in the polls. Unknown to the lord is the fact that the hero opted-in the government financing that grants him $5 pennies to his campaign, yet his opponent the bi-racial Osbama managed to get $50 million in February alone. It appears to un-biased observers that the chances of a pardon-pronto are remote.

wave99 March 2, 2008 at 10:13 a.m.

Fintan.

You sadistic side is something beyond your control...we appreciate that...rather, understand it.

You are not happy enough that Black will go to jail, so justice is not your cause...your last drivel continues to reflect that you want him to languish, suffer and be humiliated in many forms.

I'll give you some benefit of the doubt and continue to assume you have suffered horribly in some business sense,to BLACK AND CO.

You have denied this oddly enough and as a consequence, signed off then on just being a really hateful guy.

Fintan March 2, 2008 at 11:12 a.m.

Wave99, up yours! I've waited a long, long time for His Lardship and Morticia to get their comeuppance. And so have millions of others. Don't deny me and them my pleasure now.

You are talking about a big bully who wanted to have a female journalist horsewhipped and his gruesome hag wife who has written that she'd like to see me and others who criticise her disembowelled. The same hag who ruined a diplomat's career by revealing what he had said while a guest at her dinner table. A malicious, evil cow posing as a socialite.

And you think it's hateful of me to enjoy seeing them suffering. The day I see any sign of contrition on the part of either of them, any admission that their misfortune is of their own making, I might just start feeling sorry for them.

As for your opinion, I'd have to do some very serious soul-searching if you had anything good to say about me, given the nonsense you have been writing for months.

His Lardship and Morticia are done. Stick a fork in their arses and turn them over. Karma be praised.

In an effort to avoid the papparrazzi to take pictures as he enters coleman, the lord consulted via email the hotel-heires and party-girl Paris-Hilton. The heires demanded payment up-front via visa or master-card. The lord's credit cards have been cancelled by the banks for fear of being defaulted (banks never lose money). It has been stated many times that the lord believes rightly so that he is very intelligent. In one of his momments of brilliance he discovered that the Gegorian calender differs from our current one. Our March 3rd 2008 only occurs on April 1st 2008 in the old Gregoian time piece. After consulting with his estranged buddy eddie, allegedly he was advised to show up on April 1st at coleman and explain to the wardon his sound reason.

Fintan March 2, 2008 at 11:55 a.m.

I hope the British and possibly Canadian media are out in force to get pictures of His Lardship entering Coleman Institution for the Morally and Ethically Challenged, but no doubt he and Morticia will do their best to slip him in unnoticed.

My bet is they will be heavily disguised as they walk up to the prison gate, like this:

I agree with Allisia. The new blog is really being stunk up by leaf and by bloggers responding to the sadistic bully and talking about her. Especially tedious there is the resumption of the leaf-Fintan saga, and yet more silly speculation that leaf is Amiel.
Lit HAS now reappeared on that blog, but without commenting on the denial of the Con's appeal. Instead Lit was spreading some seriously incorrect information about the Thompson family's British title in an attempt to argue that Chretien done Black wrong. leaf, the self-proclaimed stickler for accuracy and honesty, has had nothing to say about that bit of misinformation.

As for the non-Black threads in the new blog, they are pathetic, hardly any responses to each of them, and those few responss are almost all by the same two posters.
Maybe if Doug starts a new thread about press coverage of the Chuck Cadman bribery scandal, there might be something else on the new blog that people want to discuss.

Kelly March 2, 2008 at 12:21 p.m.

Just some thoughts and tying up loose ends:

- There seems to be an assumption that everyone is posting here because of some endless fascination with Black. Actually, my interest is in the subject of white collar crime and Black is just one of many corporate criminals. Prior to the whole Hollinger meltdown I had scant interest in him.
- I am glad that it looks like the obstruction conviction in particular is going to stand. These white collar cases usually pivot on being able to secure incriminating emails/documents etc. The obstruction laws are written broadly enough to take into account the lame excuses felons often come up with in these circumstances. In the end, it didn’t matter whether Conrad stupidly claimed the boxes contained pictures of his uh..bootylicious (look it up) ex-girlfriend or his late Uncle Elmer’s will. Justice prevailed.
- It is ironic that a man who evidently spent half a million on bulletproof glass at his mansion will not even have the relative privacy of his own cell.
- From an image standpoint, Black goofed by calling imprisonment a “badge of honor” – surely only a lifelong thug would think that way. The only tiny upside I could think of to being in prison is one can be smug rather than annoyed when they get the “go to jail directly, do not pass go” card in Monopoly.
- One detail I admittedly found amusing was that inmates watching TV in the “lounge” just have to go with whatever the biggest (as in most ripped) guy picks. Sounds like Black should have spent some time bench pressing instead of scarfing down bon bons.
- It is notable that three of the most demeaning articles about Black’s impending imprisonment come from the previously supportive National Post, NY Post and Macleans. Also, that there is much less coverage of his plight now. It creates the impression of rats leaving the ship and growing indifference due to his diminished status.

I have to say I was much more charitable towards Black in the first stages of posting here, but I’ve been sufficiently revolted by his two sorry blog supporters and his continuing antisocial rants that there’s little sympathy left. Also, reading Judge Strine’s opinion went a long way in convincing me of what a hard-core, scofflaw Black is. That said, being an optimist I still hold out a glimmer of hope that he will one day put his intellect to good use.

Agreed. When the new blog discussion turns into something other than trivia about media and leaf's obsessions - discussions about right-wing corruption, just as this blog has discussed neoconservative corruption - it will be worthwhile.

Seems to me that this article by David Olive in the Star back in 2005 summed up the Conrad Black story very well, here is an exerpt:

"It has seemed to me since he burst on the scene in the mid-1970s that Black is an essayist who was miscast as an entrepreneur. Serial abandonment is his motif, at Dominion Stores Ltd., Massey-Ferguson Ltd. and even his beloved National Post.

So far as I can tell after years of study, Black invested a grand total of $500 of his own money in a business that grew to become the world's third-largest newspaper empire at its zenith in the late 1990s.

Black picked the right parents and grandparents, from whom he inherited the money that collateralized the foundation of his business strivings.

He had the good fortune in his youth to fall in with a tight group of "grinders" — notably long-time lieutenant David Radler, indicted for fraud in August, and later to plead guilty — who negotiated acquisitions at rock-bottom prices, then squeezed papers until they yielded fat profits of 30 per cent to 40 per cent.

And Black was repeatedly blessed with serendipity, stumbling across trophy assets in the hands of owners with a shaky grip at the Argus Corp. conglomerate, London's Daily Telegraph and the venerable Southam Inc., Canada's dominant chain of big-city dailies.

Yesterday was the penultimate moment of schadenfreude — or revelling in the misery of others — for Black's multitude of detractors, including victims of his libel writs, disdain for minority shareholders and aggrieved former employees of Dominion Stores Ltd., whose pension fund his company once unsuccessfully tried to raid. It will be topped only by the day Black is convicted, should it come to that."

And it DID come to that.

Kelly March 2, 2008 at 5:48 p.m.

When I said that I believe Black has a psychopathic personality, I didn’t just pull it out of a hat. My (non-professional) opinion is based on reading Dr. Robert Hare’s work. He is widely considered an expert on psychopathic personalities.

- he believes that there is a scale of psycopathy, with "full-blown" psychopaths like serial killers etc. on the high end and corporate psychopaths lower but still displaying many of the tell-tale traits of psychopathy. Given that it’s not an all or nothing proposition, I don’t believe that Black’s displaying some level of anxiety when he was younger precludes him from being one (as another blogger suggested).
- Even if Black wasn’t mistreated as a child, that too wouldn’t necessarily preclude him from having a psychopathic personality. Experts still haven’t reached a consensus in the nature vs. nuture argument and some believe that there are different routes to psychopathy or that they can both come into play.
- Some of the traits and behaviours are superficial charm, cunning, deceit, manipulativeness, low empathy, bullying, a disdain for laws/authority, high vindictiveness, lack of remorse.
- Other red flags in Black’s profile – his litigiousness, exploitative business dealings (particularly of vulnerable adversaries), and trail of controversy/destruction he seems to have left at various companies.

I don’t think even experts would "diagnose" him from afar but people can draw their own conclusions.

Here’s a link on the topic:

Fintan: (if you're still checking this blog)

Lit’s anonymity on either blog will not necessarily afford her protection from a defamation lawsuit from Breeden. There have been people sued for defaming public-company CEOs on stock discussion boards and Breeden

There's one more post that I hope to get in. I should have done it way back to contrast it with Black's case - it's about a white collar professional who many agree really did get kicked around by the USJD.

financing March 2, 2008 at 6:29 p.m.

I keep reading that conrad's wife is going to stay at the Palm Beach place. But the question is can she afford it?
The place has a $10,000,000 mortgage on it. The 18% interest and principal is monthly payment is about $200,000 dollars. In addition there are the property taxes, garden maintenance, sewer fees, airconditioning cost, at least 3 staff, cleaning, repairs, and so on. I would think $250,000 dollars per month as a minimum. How can she afford this? At the same time she cannot live in the USA for more than six months each year. The total estimated cost of the Palm Beach home each year is $3,000,000 based on the above figures. Lenders find that housing should not cost more than 50% of income. So she must be earning $6,000,000 per year. Please pro-black fellows explain the financing.

ROGER March 2, 2008 at 7:11 p.m.

SOME PEOPLE CAN SURVIVE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING

No one knows how Black will respond, not even Black himself. He might hypnotize himself into being compliant and obedient and do very well in jail. He might also try to be polite and have his politeness misinterpreted as either resistance or weakness, either of which would be bad for him.

I can only imagine the stress and anguish and frayed nerves and emotions of Black, Amiel, Alana and the last occupants of the bunker. No tragedy is about one person alone. There are always the family, friends, associates and colleagues involved. One wonders at the absence of the other Black children. The waiting and anticipation must be awful--it would be tempting to report early just to get it over with.

At least Black is not going to jail for life, but merely for around 6 years. That is a short time, except for the stage of Black's life. He is at an age where one counts the months and the years, knowing that one's life is drawing to a close. He is of an age where prostate problems begin to be a factor, where high blood pressure and diabetes and heart problems show up and where the medications can play havoc with libido and performance. At that age, 6 years is a very long time and deterioration can be swift. It would be indelicate to speculate on Amiel, but one has to feel a tinge of pity for her. How clumsy it will be for her and Black to get back together after a 6 year absence, assuming they are both still alive and capable of living independent lives. After 6 years, one has to break the ice again and renew lost intimacy, not easy at any age, but least of all for aging beauty queens for whom mirrors are the enemy.

What is the best they can hope for? A small cottage in an English village with a lovely garden? For many, this would be an ideal way to live out the remainder of their days, but one would be hard put to imagine Amiel or Black satisfied with such a modest and unpretentious lifestyle. Indeed, with the cost of English real estate, even such a modest dwelling might be beyond the reach of the impoverished Blacks, six years hence.

After all the scheming and social climbing and conniving and grandstanding, what did it benefit them? Even had they not suffered this downfall, what wasted and empty pretentious lives they led! Tomorrow, while Black settles in to imprisonment and restrictions on his movement and regimentation, I shall smell the sweet air of freedom. Tomorrow is going to be a long hard day for me, but I will enjoy it and feel good at the end of the day. Black's life is over. No amount of praying can change that. After tomorrow, Amiel will have lost face and nothing she says or does can change that.

The Canadian/British Royal Family thinks we are all stupid.
They want us to believe that harry is a combatant in Afganistan where young men are dying uselessly for an imperialist cause both British and Canadian. The fact is that harry was taken in secret to afganistan dressed up a army soldier, photographed and returned to England. Then the news was leaked and the photos shown. A phony ploy by the royals.

When has a thief entering jail received so much attention. It is truly sickening, how this vulgar thief is playing on the public's stupidity. This thief is not a tycoon, he is not a wealthy fellow, actually his assets are less than his debt, making him backrupt. In 13 hours the felon is going to be getting up and somehow get to coleman. To milk the press some more, he is going to allow the TV CTV-CBC film his arrival at the jail. Probably he is going to make a small speech prior to entering the gates claiming his innocence yet again. Hopefully once inside the walls of the jail, we are going to hear from him no longer.

I think we may already have a winner to the contest announced on the cover, if she wishes to claim the prize: Lady Black in the Goebbels-portrait living room with a Naked Lunch memorial replica of Steely Dan.

Billy March 2, 2008 at 11:54 p.m.

Roger: You're post is right on. I read the 40-page Coleman rules and I don't see anybody at his age, of his current lifestyle, having a normal life after six years of that brutal regimentation. He can talk a good game, and even think a good game, but man, six years of those rules .....
It will be interesting. I don't think it'll work out for him because he's never been tested at this level.

billy March 3, 2008 at 12:11 a.m.

What an ass is Brian Stewart----- "But Mr. Stewart said he's talked to friends about it and plans to read, write and possibly even teach while in jail.
The prison also has a church where Lord Black, a devout Catholic, plans to spend a lot of his time, as well as a library."
Reality check Brian. Its not that Black gets to decide how to spend his days -- he can plan "to read, write" all he wants. Based on a read of the rules, he'll have little time for implementing his plan.

Brian Stewart, fartcatcher, if its so great, go with him.

>Peter Griffiths February 27, 2008 at 3:10 p.m.

"Lucrecia was a sweet girl who was discredited in history by the enemies of her father and brother."

Typical, isn't it? Really great people get framed and then the historians blacken their memory. A sweet girl like Lucretia Borgia, who never really poisoned anyone - no one that didn't deserve it anyway - and then all those other great visionaries like Hitler, Genghis Khan, Pol Pot and, of course, Conrad Black.<

... but I am not amused. I have to guess it was old Flim Flam who has obviously got too much time (slime) on his hands.

I have been at sea on a job for the last month - foul weather and no chance to log in but the quick review I have been able to do since returning shows that things here have not risen above the sad slagging matches.

From a cursory scan, it seemed that Grandma, Finn-Fein, BBC, Jade etc. had dropped off – but the various typos and style repetitions of each show they are still here but choosing to lurk under numerous new aliae rather than continue posting under their former handles. Odd? I must have missed something.

The Black news watch is thin, and Amiel’s latest bleating truly pathetic - wherein I suggest TL either endorse the expansion of our topic here or set up a couple of new forums - maybe one for a Federal election watch, and another for the Old Green Baloney/Schrieber saga. The Cadman file could also have a venue?

So, what do you say, Mr. Bell? Can we expand these debates to a couple of other topics, or would you prefer this one stay dedicated to Black things? If that is the case would you or your owners consider opening up a couple of new threads?

There’s lots of meat and more than a few potatoes we could kick around and you have drawn a regular attendance of people who seem to want, in any way they can, to contribute to topics and debate outside the maw of the Asper/Rogers Empires. People who seem to think Canada could and should be a much better place if we would only get past all the bumpf and B.S. and know the real stories, would probably take you up on some new challenges.
