Babs goes batty
Posted on February 11, 2008 by Douglas Bell
The opening sentence of Barbara Amiel’s latest offering in Maclean’s proves beyond a shadow of a shadow of a doubt that, whatever else you might say about her, the lady is as good as her word: “As we face the next round of tribulations, there are distinct signs that I am turning slightly batty.”
In a piece devoted to illustrating her affection for her dogs and her husband (in which order I will leave to minds greater than my own), Lady Black reveals—in something of a digression—that:
My three dogs are in Toronto, bonded for life in the face of my absence with our 70-year-old German houseman. They bark with a distinctly Rhenish sound which even Nobel Prize winner Konrad Lorenz, authority on the language of animals, would have trouble understanding. Werner’s kindness to every living creature from frogs to me is taxed by my insistence on hanging a large portrait of Joseph Goebbels by Toronto artist Tony Scherman in our living room. The picture depicts evil brilliantly, and I’ve renamed it after several people in my husband’s drama. Werner’s late father happened to be the night chauffeur for fellow Rhinelander Reichsminister Doktor Goebbels, and he has a loathing of Nazism supplemented by a pained look whenever I play Wagner.
WHOA.
NO.
WAY.
I open the floor to whatever suggestions our noble readers would care to venture as to whom she is referring when she says “several people in my husband’s drama.” My guesses: “Richard” as in Breeden, “Eric” as in Sussman and “Eddie” as in take your pick.
Further along the spectrum toward sanity (of a sort), his Lordship further sought to ingratiate himself with John McCain over the weekend by picking him in the pages of the National Post to win the U.S. presidential election. Some time ago, I took a jaunt into the Twilight Zone by suggesting that if McCain won, he might put a word in Dubya’s ear regarding a commutation. Black reports this weekend that Tricia Nixon likely won more votes for McCain than the Kennedy clan pulled for Obama. Tricia loved the Nixon book, and she’s definitely got McCain’s ear hence, therefore, ipso facto…
And back on this planet, David Radler is suing Donald Trump for squelching on a condo deal entre les deux. This after Trump once announced publicly at a dinner in Radler’s honour that “when David says something, you can bank on it. His word is his bond…. As for me? He doesn’t seem to think so.” Okay, so I made that last bit up. But you catch my drift.

LOL! Dogs with Rhinisch accents? Goebbels portraits in a Toronto livingroom? Nazi Konrad Lenz an expert on the language of animals??? LOL! Did Lit200 edit this Amiel drivel? Lenz did work on imprinting--you know, ducklings hatching following the first moving object they see, whether mother duck, dog, human or balloon. How did this morph into the language of animals? While it is true that dogs do respond to commands in German or English, it is not the language they understand as representational symbolic meaningful language, but sounds, mere sounds. No one has yet demonstrated that dogs or any other animal pick up accents from human speech! The entire piece with respect to German language and animal language is complete nonsense, worthy of Lit's level of knowledge of the world. As for naming a dog after her ex-husband, one wonders whether she had the dog neutered? I could delve more into the psychobabble Freudian aspects of dogs and Amiel, but I will spare everyone--I am fiercely anti-Freud anyway. As for the good Dr Goebbels, I am left speechless! Really. Why did Eddie not try an insanity defence? I think it is worth a try on appeal! Combined with Amiel surreptiously drugging the crooked Lord, he was also completely insane. Then he can spend the rest of his miserable life in a lunatic asylum amongst a whole host of Napoleons, Nixons, and other Lords or the realm! He would fit right in!
ROGER February 11, 2008 at 7:41 p.m.
IF AMIEL HAS ANY FRIENDS, NOW IS THE TIME TO HAVE HER UNDERGO PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION! If Lit was at all of any use to anyone, she would get Amiel to undergo a complete psychiatric evaluation. There is something not quite right with the bizarre things she is writing. At her age, she is at increased risk for dementia. How could Macleans publish the writings of a person who is obviously mentally ill? Then again, how can the National Post have a criminal's column?
Wilma February 11, 2008 at 8:27 p.m.
Forget about who she is referring to -- my jaw dropped (and has yet to come back) -- a portrait of GOEBBELS?!?!?!?! You've got to be kidding?

The lord in his column predicts a McCain win in November because of his stand to wage war in Iraq for another 100 years. I believe that the lord prediction falls on it face
because Americans want change. The Clinton's do not offer enough change, which leaves Obsama as the winner. The oligarchy that runs the US has already decided that they want Obsama. Murchoch and Buffet are backing Obsama. Why?
The oligarchy realizes that the bush military US imperialism has failed. They know that the middle and poor Americans and the world want change. Obsama in the white house is 'instant' change. Obsama need do nothing, his sole presence is 'change'. The oligarchy is now offering a 'cosmetic' change fooling the masses and the world with Barrack Hussein Obsama. This is brilliant, a machiavelian move by Murdoch, Buffet and other oligarchs.

ON SECOND THOUGHT, DR GOEBBELS WAS A MASTER OF PROPAGANDA AND THE USE OF WORDS TO ATTACK, VILLIFY, BRUTALIZE AND WIND UP THE MOB. It makes sense that Goebbels is Amiel's and Black's hero. Recall that Black also hung a portrait of Al Capone in his boardroom at Hollinger International! Amiel and Black are scum.
ROGER go back and read it again February 11, 2008 at 9:30 p.m.

Goebbels is NOT BA's hero. She admires the artist because "the picture depicts evil brilliantly". My own personal opinion is that she would have to really admire an artist a lot to want to have a depiction (however brilliant) of evil on her walls.

More camp from Amiel.
I'm not sure I'd want even a genuis' picture of evil in my living room--unless it was a room in which I and my loved ones spent very little time; perhaps after all it, with such a presence, is best reserved as a room for one's dogs. And if their keeper doesn't like it--well, a disgruntled underling can always quit. More of her famed sensitivity from Lady Black towards "the little people".
More calling of the people involved in the case against Black, Nazis--and the court-room prosecutors and David Radler are all Jews. What a vulgar insult.
I think Doug is correct as to a major reason why Black is sucking up to McCain, and the always-relevant Trisha Nixon. Commutation or a full pardon are his best bet not to spend several years in jail, and Conrad has a long history of publicly sucking up to persons and groups from whom he wants a favour.
ROGER February 12, 2008 at 1:06 a.m.
NEXT AMIEL WILL DISCLOSE THE OTHER PAINTINGS SHE AND LORD BLACK HAD HANGING AROUND. Perhaps Il Duce Mussolini? Franco? Stalin? Adolph? Goering? Pinochet? The graduating classes of torturers from the School of the Americas? THESE ARE AMIEL'S HEROES! Paintings on walls of livingrooms are about one's heroes! One wonders what knick knacks lay around in their bedroom? De Sade's book and whips? Or is that Sacher-Masoch's aunt's fur coat and whip? Is it any wonder that Lit and Leaf are enamored with the creepy Amiel and Black? Did Black and Emmett Cardinal Carter stand around the Goebbel's portrait and admire it? Who else visited the Blacks and enjoyed the "art work"?
Evil is a theological term. If one is an atheist, one does not believe in evil. Why do people insist on injecting theological thought into every discussion? Insh'Allah, that will change!
Roger said it all February 12, 2008 at 2:19 a.m.
Not much to add really after Roger's contributions. Just a few questions, don't you have pension plans in Canada? Why, then, is a 70-year-old still working at Schloss Blackula in Toronto? And what's to stop her taking the dogs down to the mansion in Palm Beach? The place is certainly big enough, and I suppose there are no quarantine problems that can't be overcome. Amiel is clearly out of her tree, hardly surprising when you look at the depth of her disgrace and the bleakness of her future. Perhaps reality is finally penetrating what must be the densest denial shield in history. As for enjoying looking at pictures of pure evil, maybe she should just put plenty of mirrors on the walls of the various mansions that she still inhabits. On second thought, she probably wouldn't cast reflections in them, so why not just some pictures of herself. That's evil enough. Just look at the hag in this video:
http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=19...
jab3 February 12, 2008 at 3:38 a.m.
evil is not purely a theological term, anymore than good is.
I don't think fascination with evil is a good thing. Nor do I think that becoming cosy and overly familiar with images of evil is edifying or psychologically fortifying. Perhaps Babs can pick up with Marilyn Manson if she gets tired of waiting for Con to finish his time--though maybe MM prefers cats.
I can't help thinking, though, that Bab's column is a reckless fiction, a batty put-on, it's so over the top and campy. I mean, Fintan could have written it as a parody of the Blacks: and how Lit and leaf and Wave would have been on him for that!
Delusional February 12, 2008 at 6:29 a.m.
I tend to agree with Roger that those overpaid lawyers should have tried for a plea of insanity. On the other hand, it might not be such a good idea after all in a country where they routinely execute oligophrenics. Not, of course, that CB ever criticized the USA for that or anything else.

Funny, I don't recall Kornrad Lorenz mentioning dogs talking with accents. And how would even a lifelong bitch like Watford Babs recognize a Rhenish accent as distinct from, say, a swäbisch or bayerisch one? The latest bumpf in Toothpaste magazine is all over the place, revealing that she has finally cracked. As for batty, I always suspected she flaps around the skies at night. What irony, too, that this crone, who has spent millions of other people's money trying to look a permanent 25 now describes herself as "old". Can this be the start of a beginning to come to terms with reality, or is it just another pathetic attempt to gain sympathy from some of the "little people" for whom she always had so much contempt? BTW, can anyone imagine her using a pooper scooper or a poo bag to clean up after her dogs or does she have a servant for that too?
Lit 200 February 12, 2008 at 11:59 a.m.
My interest here has to do with the blatant misuse of the overweening power accorded to special prosecutors in the US Justice Department. And my issues with Roger derive from the same thing: Roger wants immutable strictures applied to personal choice, very much like those that apply to the personal choices of people (dress, behaviour etc) in lands ruled by religious law.
Roger would even forbid the use of "theological terms in every discussion" and he, an avowed atheist, calls upon Allah to forbid such a horrible thing in the future.
I have my own Insh'Allah: that newcomers like Roger do not succeed in their ambition to move Canada to the hard, hard left; to subvert hard-won personal freedoms and human rights, to overturn the Constitution and transform Canada into a place where virtue is mandated and policed by those in authority.
For the life of me, I cannot understand Roger calling Amiel scum (except that anyone with a different point of view is always scum to Roger), since he is so very much like her. They are two peas in a pod in style, outlook and philosophy, though they speak from the opposite ends of a continuum.
There is in both, a certain whine in everything they write. They are both hugely disappointed in people. Where Amiel looks at a scientist and sees a Nobel Prize winner, Roger looks at the same person and sees a Nazi.
Indeed, if you look closely at Roger's comments you will detect the faint aroma of Nazism: the adoration of untrammeled centralized power.

Like his idols the Blacks, Lit 200 keeps on getting it wrong. "Er redete mit dem Vieh, den Vögeln und den Fischen" is in fact a delightful book by Konrad Lorenz and does not mention Dr. Doolittle at all. It was published in 1964 and my copy is a paperback published by Deutscher Taschenbuchverlag GmbH & Co. KG, Munich.
As for the persons arrested in Denmark, the Danish police did not use such a tendentious word as Lit's "extremists" about them. Let's give them even a fraction of what Lit demanded for Conrad Black - a presumption of innocence until their guilt is proved on the evidence.

IN FRANCE, SCHOOLGIRLS ARE BANNED FROM ATTENDING SCHOOL BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO REMOVE THEIR HEADSCARVES. The irony is that the girls who started it all, including the lawsuits over the issue in France are Muslim girls whose mother is Muslim and whose father is Jewish. In Germany, a woman who moved there as a refugee from Taliban ruled Afghanistan, learnt German, went to university and graduated as a school teacher. The Land (province) in which she taught told her to remove her scarf or they would fire her from her job as a school teacher. She replied that the law allowed her to wear a scarf. When they fired her and it went to trial, she won the lawsuit. However, in ruling in her favour, the judges in their obiter dicta, stated that the government could change the law and fire her. The Land complied, changed the law, and promptly fired her. Having once been a Taliban victim, she has learnt the hard way that there are Taliban in the West as well. The West insists that all women uncover and show themselves, without reserve. From the covered nuns of old to the new immigrants from places where purdah once held sway, all are to be exposed, like it or not. Lit200 calls this individual freedom! Lit200 calls the suspension of that ancient English law right of habeas corpus a blow for freedom! Lit200 says that the French Resistance fighters who opposed Vichy were terrorists and Vichy and the Nazis the good guys, somewhat along the lines of what Jean Marie Le Pen suggested, althoug Le Pen was more reserved in his praise than Lit200. Lit200 says that certain immigrants are not entitled to question while others have freedom to challenge. Amiel is an immigrant. Black is no longer a citizen or even a permanent resident. As Jean Lyotard wrote some years ago, while commenting on the stateless people of the 1920s in Europe, to be a stateless person is to have no rights. No government will defend your rights. But no government defended Omar Khadr or Mahar Arrar. Indeed, their own govt aided their tormentors! I have no illusions of citizenship. I have lived in police states. Many of my colleagues died in police custody as schoolchildren. I am a free person and no one and nothing can change that. I will be free even if I am imprisoned. Lit200 requires other people's permission to be free! If a strong central govt is good in times of war, then it is good in economic hard times. Lit200 believes in corporate rule and the freedom of elites to dominate. Lit200 cannot understand the economic advantages of Canadian medicare over the laissez faire inefficient medical system of America.

DANISH FILMS ON THE AFGHAN WAR. About 3 years ago, a Danish film-maker made a movie on the war. It depicted how the Afghan War was being brought into the lives, homes and family life of Denmark. A good and dependable man, who is brother, father, son and husband of the characters depicted, goes off to war as an officer. While over there, he is taken prisoner and is forced by his captors to kill a fellow Danish soldier who is in captivity with him. He gets carried away in a frenzy and batters the soldier to a pulp. When he is rescued, he lies about what happened and even visits the family and wife of the man he killed, concealing what really happened. But his own life falls apart and there is the scene of him trashing his home, beating his wife (she had a one-night stand with his ne'er-do-well brother while he was missing in action). That movie was made 3 years ago or thereabouts. Afghans will never surrender. They are fighting on their land. Why is Denmark in Afghanistan? Why are there rightwing politicians and neonazis active in Denmark today? Given Denmark's experience in WW2, it is amazing that they have failed to learn anything from being an occupied country. Denmark's economy is dependent on trade with Muslim nations. If Denmark infuriates Muslims, their economy will fail and many jobs are dependent on this export trade. Danes now understand this. How they handle the issues will be watched. Danes are uncomfortable with multiculturalism. There is a sickness spreading through Europe that jeopardizes their entire fabric and economic future. Those countries that fail to have social peace will suffer economically. Those that succeed to have social harmony around a multicultural model will prosper. It is that simple. Steyn is too uneducated (he is a high school drop-out) to understand such things. Black failed at business and is too dumb to learn anything meaningful. Amiel is obviously spaced out on drugs. They are Lit200's role models. What can one expect? "In seine haende, dass Kind war tod."
Free Christiania February 12, 2008 at 4:03 p.m.
Roger makes many good points, not least this: "Given Denmark's experience in WW2, it is amazing that they have failed to learn anything from being an occupied country."
However, Denmark's experience of occupation was far less traumatic than the occupation of Afghanistan, to which they are contributing, is for the unfortunate people of Afghanistan. It took the Germans about three hours to occupy Denmark and the good citizens of Copenhagen had no inkling what was going on until they opened their front doors to take in the milk and saw German soldiers everywhere. The Germans interfered rather little in the administration of Denmark, hundreds of thousands of Danes went (voluntarily) to work in Germany and Danish industry worked at full blast throughout the war to satisfy the demand from Germany. The Germans, in return, paid handsomely for all they ordered and there were few protests from the Danes. It was only after the war, when it emerged that the Germans had seized the plates used to print Danish money and counterfeited huge volumes of it, that most Dames realized the occupation had not been such a good thing after all. In other words, occupation is bad, but ripping off is worse.

I haven't read Amiel's column, just the comments here, but I too find it astounding that a Jew would have a portrait of Goebbels - that's just twisted and the part about renaming it after several people in her husband's drama is plain juvenile.
Good to see that Lit considers Nazism to have an aroma. Most people consider it a stench.
I did read Conrad's column and as always it was peppered with examples of him projecting:
Here's one:

Yes, indeed, check it out and find that the quote by "fintan" (who may and may not be our own) about Mrs Obama was actually this:
"Yes, she certainly is a woman that commands respect, and sets an example for not only other African-Americans, but indeed all of us.
"Hardly surprising, therefore, that prominent neocons are trying every dirty trick in the book in their efforts to disparage her and thereby weaken her husband's prospects. One example of this kind of innuendo was in a column by your former "proprietor" and convicted fraudster Conrad Black in the Nazional Post in his native Canada.
"In addition to hinting that she would never have gotten anywhere without the affirmative action policies he so opposes, he also attached the epithet callipygian to her. And with typical arrogance, invited readers to 'look it up'.
"No one is commenting on the physical attributes of any of the white candidates' wifes. Mr. and Mrs. Obama have my best wishes for success, but they will have to face a long and dirty battle."
leaf, bewildered sad scene that she is, failed to see that the attribution line is BELOW, not above the comment. And "fintan" did not mention the Kennedys.
leaf missed another interesting comment on the same page.

How time flies! less than 20 days and Baron Black of Crossharbour, Privy Councillor, Knight of the Holy See, patron of the arts, erstwhile media mogul and general cat's whiskers will become prisoner number something or other and denizen of a world without French wines, private jets, servants, gourmet meals and many of the other pleasures that he has taken for granted for so long.
He may even find himself having to accommodate himself to the "wishes" of people he would definitely regard as his inferior.
He must be extremely delusional to think anyone gives a hoot about his views on the US presidential election. And even more delusional if he believes toadying up to any of the candidates will help him escape his just desserts. In fact, he is only insulting Senator McCain if he believes that gentleman would interfere with the process of justice that has landed a swindler on the road to incarceration with other bad people.
Black reveals the essentially thuggish side of his character with his constant snide remarks about the physical features of the candidates he does not like and their associates. he has already commented on Mrs. Obama's posterior, and in his latest drivel he comments on the Kennedy women's teeth, the flabbiness of Senator Kennedy (who is after all of an pretty advanced age) and so on. I bet Black would never have the cojones to make a snooty remark about the largish teeth of Mrs. Schwarzenegger to the Terminator in person, otherwise he might find his own teeth missing.
Or maybe all those remarks about the physical features of others ios his way of getting back at those who have sneered and jeered at his own crone wife, who looks like something out of a Frankenstein movie.

I am no apologist for the US of Fg A! But the fact is that there is a HUGE and CONTINUING hue and cry over Guantanamo in the United States today. And the Bush Administration is continually being questioned, criticized and called to account by the media and by political opponents.
Contrast that with what goes on in countries that are ruled by religious zealots.
In war, the usual treatment of captured spies, snipers and irregulars is a bullet to the back of the head and carry on, and don't you dare infer that I am recommending that - I am making a fg observation. Guantanamo is a blot on the reputation of United States. It's disgusting. And it will be forever known as that. It's only slightly better than the bullet-in-the-back-of-the-head way of dealing with combatants who don't wear a uniform.

Roger's view:
In Roger's world some people (felons like Conrad Black, let's say) are not permitted to write columns in national newspapers, or appear on national television. Since he is not, that begs the question of who can and who cannot write. I will let Roger regale you with his lists of those who are allowed and those who are not.
In Roger's world, forget individual rights. What's important are the rights of society as a whole; the individual is subject to the wishes of the majority, represented by (for now) elected officials. Later, Roger would dispense with elections since they always breed venal politicians.
In Roger's world, it's permissible for families to circumcise their daughters, partly because that is a protected cultural practice and more fundamentally, because it leads to a more orderly society since it prevents females from enjoying sexual intercourse, making them less likely to stray from their husbands. Similarly, forced marriages are permitted. The state will decree proper dress for women. There will be punishments for transgressions.
In Roger's world, capitalism and the accumulation of personal wealth will be strongly curtailed... the state, not wealthy patrons, will decide what objects should be preserved for future generations, what art, what music, what poetry, what literature.
In Roger's world, there will be no criticism of Islam permitted whatsoever. The Islamic world is the ultimate flower of human wit, intelligence, imagination. Western culture in its entirety is regarded and taught as twisted and evil.
Oh yes, and it not permitted to bring theological concepts like evil into everyday conversation.
The what ifs of the world February 13, 2008 at 9:59 a.m.
All the what ifs don't reflect reality as we see it. What if the lord was able to obstruct without that video, what if the lady had grown old gracefully, what if the bush administration had listened to the UN, what if the greedy lending institutions had not allowed people to borrow beyond their abilities to pay back, what if the Canadian government stood by their citizens despite the colour of their skin or the origin of their parents birth, what if the world recognized the genocide of muslims prior to 911, what if the people of Afghanistan had not been subjected to war for 3 decades, what if we stopped the use of foreign cheap labour then betrayed these people as criminals because we refuse to give them legal status? So many questions go unanswered.

I hate the idea of decrying and belittling of that enormously rich and accomplished tradition known as "Western Thought." If you think that is an expression of "hatred for a billion people" you are just totally out to lunch.

LOL! LIT200 KNOWS WHEN SHE IS BEAT! No where can Lit200 produce any evidence to support any of her claims, but that does not deter her. Fact is, female genital mutilation is practiced regularly in N America, but Lit200 has no comment on this matter. Lit20 has no comment on the violent misogynous culture in which she lives here in N America--she prefers to dwell on her supposed knowledge of far off exotic cultures of which she knows nothing whatsoever first hand. Lit200 mentions a smorgasbord of "facts" that she imputes to Islam and myself, without any regard for truth. Lit200 is a Goebbels disciple--the bigger the lie, the more often repeated, the more it can be made into a "fact." Perhaps this is true in the world Lit200 occupies. But in my world, the truth is not created by propaganda. Take the charge of arranged marriage. Arranged marriage is not a monopoly of any one culture or religion. Christians practice arranged marriages in certain parts of the world. Indeed, high aristocrats of the west practice arranged marriages--if it is good for the aristocracy, why ought the common people not freely partake of it too, might be the reasoning of some. Are mail order brides too commercial a transaction to be considered an arranged marriage? The most notorious case in Canada of an arranged marriage is that coming out of the Christian cult in Golden, related to Warren Jeffs followers. Another notorious case is that of the Saskatchewan dentist who was in an arranged marriage with an Indo-American physician, whom she murdered in the States--they were of the Hindu tradition. Why does Lit200 try to engage in debate on matters she knows nothing about? Moreover, why does Lit200 think that dishonesty is acceptable in public discourse? Goebbels. All roads lead to Goebbels in the Lit200 mindset.
Just look at facts February 13, 2008 at 12:07 p.m.
Not that Lit would ever like to see facts get in the way of a good theory or argument, but she really ought to stop being so utterly ethnocentric and realize that we are living in a multicultural world. I don't know how Lit chose her partner, had one chosen for her or just does without, but there are very many people in the world - dozens of times the population of Canada - who have no trouble at all with arranged marriages.
The results of a national survey published in India last November were very revealing: around three-quarters of Indians - men and women, urban and rural and even "westernised" IT workers - said they found arranged marriages to be the most sensible solution for them.
It is absolute BS for Lit, herself an immigrant of whatever generation, to expect the rest of the world to live the way she wants. What if the native people of Canada told her to live their way or else fk off back to wherever she came from?
It would also be interesting to hear what Lit has to say about male circumcision when the female version upsets her so much. If the Creator had meant men to be bald-headed in that way, he'd never have given them a foreskin. Or?

Konrad Lorenz is versatile. He even explains why Americans admired the guy in charge the day terrorists hit New York City:
Bush's victory is the voice of an angry America
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main....
"America had a traumatic experience on September 11, 2001. The murder of 3,000 people cannot be easily forgotten. Americans are neither naive nor over-reacting, as some of the British like to say, snobbily pointing to their own sang-froid about the IRA, which, terrible though it is, has never come close to the horror of murdering 3,000 people in one go. When a nation has such a traumatic experience, it is natural to bond with whomever happens to be the leader at the time. "Imprinting" was what Lorenz called it. "
"Lorenz discovered that by being the first authority figure in the vision of newly born jackdaws and ducks, he could imprint himself for ever on their consciousness. The photos of Lorenz walking around his pond followed by the ducklings, who clearly viewed him as parent, sum up the role Bush now holds in the American consciousness."

"oh, you don't make sense, you must be a silly old woman" ... proving once again the inbred phobia they have about women and the disaffection of all things feminine that colours their twisted reasoning. Please gentlemen, a little more reason and a little less of the old misogyny, please.
And please, show us all that you can READ instead of inventing things. I have said nothing against ARRANGED marriages and but I do stand against FORCED marriages, especially those between young women and much older men.
Obviously, I have given Roger too much to swallow at one go. Therefore I will break it down:
Has Roger ever said that Conrad Black should not be allowed to write columns for the National Post? Yes or no.
Has Roger ever said Conrad Black should NOT BE ALLOWED to appear on the Rich Mercer show, yes or no.
Has Roger ever denigrated the accomplishments of western history, thinking, accomplishments? Or, put another way, has Roger ever written on this blog that Eastern thought is far superior and the accomplishments of the Islamic tradition far outshine those of the Western world?
Let's begin with those few things. If I am in error on any of these matters let him say say so.
And instead of beating around the bush, let Roger say once and for all that he is opposed to female circumcision - something he has never done.

Some ass accuses me of being uncomfortable in a multicultural world. Zut! My family represents eight nationalities, including Armenian, Israeli, Irish and native American and I have received training of various kinds on three continents.
I've seen what works and what doesn't. An example of what works is the vast Hungarian influx into Canada in 1956. These folks became more Canadian than Canadians and gained senior positions in the arts, sciences, government, unions business, all without trying to subvert the traditions and established "ways" of Canada. They maintained their heritage through clubs and associations. About a quarter made sure the first generation spoke Hungarian. Very, very few moved back to Hungry. Most were thankful for the opportunity to start a new life in Canada and there was never a backlash that I know of.

RENE's Cousin February 13, 2008 at 3:52 p.m.
Lit 200: So are you comfortable in the multicultural world of the east coast Jamaican gangs and the west coast tongs?
Because what doesn't work on the other hand you don't show, is exemplified in the vast influx of Asians prior to and following the hand-back of Hong Kong to the Communists, which led to a huge influx of tightly held wealth and money into BC causing inflation of land values - so that young Canadians whose forbears had pioneered the move west and built Vancouver, no longer could afford homes in their own city.
The Asians trooped in, buying up houses through agents a half dozen at a time in areas such as upper drawer British Properties, while flooding other neighborhoods such as now quaintly called Shaughnessy, a Gallic name, which soon became hard pressed to find a third generation Canadian living in them.
Assimilate? Hardly! Street signs in Vancouver are in Mandarin as well English (forget French, Canada’s ‘other’ Official Language) and many, many of Canada’s latter day immigrants do not speak English by choice, or because they simply cannot! I happened to be in Pearson once and an Asian Lady, with a Canadian passport, made a sweeping negative motion of her hand when the Immigration Person asked her if she spoke English.
The RCMP in Van have difficulty tracking drug criminals inside the Tongs as well as the pimps who run the prostitution rings in British Colombia because of similar names and false papers. In Toronto meanwhile, the RCMP is presented with similar problems with Jamaican gangs and drug distribution.
Canada’s 'Open Door' Immigration policy has been a disaster for law enforcement and for anything that can be culturally called Canadian and a far cry from your heady days of Hungarian immigration, and those immigrants in those days who truly wished to become Canadian.
All too often the new immigrants congregate in their ethnic ‘little cities’ and assimilate only what they need to assimilate, save some money, and retire back to wherever to live beyond their pre-immigration dreams, while Canadian social programs and freebies buy their votes. (end part 1)
RENE'S Cousin February 13, 2008 at 3:53 p.m.
Lit200:
(Part 2)
These new immigrants include organized drug rings and prostitution families consisting usually of a ‘roof’ and a Russian, Ukrainian, or Asian on a student visa, and the quite lost homegrown girls who find protection behind the nameless and faceless tongs.
There is no democracy in Canada anymore: A no in a referendum about NAFTA gets you NAFTA anyway. A referendum against GST garners a resounding NO and you get GST anyway.
On the west coast you know who your new PM is before you vote for him (or her).
There is no democracy in Canada anymore. Why?
Because it is deliberately exploited Pareto inefficiency in a political arena of skewed voter systems purposely coupled with a social system that relies on freebies and open door immigration for votes, and by increasing the civil service sector to administer same.
This keeps the self-serving politicos in power, and on 'for life' pensions after only a term, and by default the general Canadian electorate taxed beyond reason, impotent, and ‘on the farm’.
And as far as Canadian culture goes, that urban sprawl called Mississauga exemplifies:
Once farmland and once the pastoral homes of the Mississaugans of the Anishinaabe people, it is now perhaps only 50% linguistically English (the native peoples long since gone) with Polish and Punjabi the other predominant tongues among the new melting pot of multiculturalism gone amok in Turbans-on-a-Mountie Canada.
The only real 'Canadian' endroit left, paradoxically perhaps to the Anglophone, in this immigration onslaught, where culture and things ‘Canadian’ still prosper, is Quebec.

You have put the discussion into another realm. I was defending myself against an unstated charge of Canadian xenophobia by Roger and his mini-me. I said I have seen multiculturalism at its best and worst. The Hungarians were an example of the best. Canada did it's part as a magnanimous host, the Hungarians did their part as mostly smart, mostly hard-working people who did not come to change the country but to contribute. The record shows they did that.
I will be interested to read the reactions to your grievances.

WOULD THOSE BE THE HUNGARIANS BROUGHT IN TO WORK IN THE MINES OF NORTHERN ONTARIO AS SCAB LABOUR TO BUST THE UNIONS? Nice folks! Those were some of the folks who brought fascism into Canada. George Jonas in a column a few days ago in the National Post described what a hole Hungary was, a place where multiple families lived in a single apartment, where one had a schedule for the bathroom and where sex crazed Hungarians used taxis driven by former prostitutes and telephone booths as places for amorous dallying. In Canada, those same people acted like Amiel and Jonas, putting up a pretense of coming from great oppulence and carrying their rabid ideas of anti-everything they self-defined as socialism or communism. How many war criminals snuck into Canada with the people Lit200 describes as being the salt of the earth? Lots. Once here, they attacked, both verbally and violently Canadians who disagreed with their extremist political views. Lit200 ought to study some Canadian history before making more false statements and painting false pictures of who did what and when. Long before the Hungarians arrived in Canada, Chinese and East Indians and Black people were already established immigrant communities in Canada. The Chinese paid with head taxes and blood for each piece of track in the national dream of the railway, long, long before any Hungarians set foot in Canada--indeed, long before there was a country of Hungary (at that time, they were still part of he K und K--the Hapsburg Austro-Hungarian Empire. Having helped to destroy much of central Europe and their own country and left themselves open to Stalinist invasion, they fled to Canada to create more chaos and brought with them their violence into labour relations and on the picket lines of Canada! Amiel for her part nearly started a riot in Toronto with her inflammatory racist articles and her editorship of the Toronto Sun. How the past looks through rose coloured glasses depends on one's ideology, at least in Lit's case.
ROGER February 13, 2008 at 5:26 p.m.
THE EAST EUROPEAN EXTREMISTS ATTACKED CANADIAN VALUES AS SOON AS THEY LANDED IN CANADA. They claimed medicare ideas and other ideas to make Canada a modern, democratic state, were extreme leftwing socialism and communism. They formed the core of the Wolfgang Droege, Heritage Front, Ernst Zundel groups who were violent neonazi groups active in Canada, spewing forth hate messages and violently attacking people in the streets. One ought not to forget that the Reform Party had these people as prominent and influential members in their party, the party that is essentially the Harper governing party of Canada! So instead of being benign assimilationists, they were the core of the forces of reaction and rightwing terror, associated with strike busting and attacks on abortion services providers and political active to thwart social progress in Canada.

DO I BELIEVE CRIMINALS LIKE CONRAD BLACK BELONG IN JAIL DOING HARD TIME? Of course I do!
DO I BELIEVE THAT CRIMINALS OUGHT TO BE GIVEN SPACE TO SHAMELESSLY AIR THEIR CRIMINAL VIEWPOINTS? Of course not! Criminals have the right to due process of law and the right to be heard, in court. Do criminals like Black, who is too cowardly or wise not to try to lie to the court, have a right to spread their lies in national newspapers? Of course not! Why give criminals such rights to spread their deviant opinions? Why Lit would argue for such rights for Clifford Olson, Paul Bernardo and Conrad Black is beyond me!
DO I BELIEVE THAT CRIMINALS OUGHT TO HAVE AIR TIME ON WHAT IS BILLED A COMEDY SHOW ON NATIONAL TV? Hell no! Unless it is to shame the offender as part of rehabilitation process, it is patently absurd! Hardened criminals like Black are no laughing matter. He ought to be filmed being processed into jail, stripped, bent over and made to cough so that other executive white collars tempted with thievery will have the image seared into their brains so they never steal money again. Of course such video should only be available on pay-per-view tv, with the proceeds used to pay for Black's stay in prison. Why should taxpayers be burdened with feeding and clothing the crook?
In summary, WHILE LIT200 BELIEVES IN CODDLING WHITE COLLAR CRIMINALS, I believe in making them pay for their crimes. Lit is soft on white collar criminals. I am tough on white collar criminals. Indeed, I believe in being tough on criminals of all types. Why Lit is soft on crime, is clear. Lit believes that rich white old guys get a break when they are caught. If the criminals are black, Asian or Hispanic, Lit wants them crucified. Why Lit defends criminals is a matter of race and cultural origin. I believe in equality of treatment.

I have now shown your total error and ignorance vis a vis your claim on Arab language spread, on arranged marriages, on your claims for Hungarians as immigrants and your racism vis a vis much earlier immigrants like the Chinese, Indians and Black peoples. Indeed, your implication that the Hungarians preceded these visible minority immigrant groups is both racially offensive and demonstrative of your ignorance, simultaneously! Congratulations!

DO I BELIEVE THAT Brian Vallee's book, The War on Women, detailing intimate partner violence against women and girls in Canada, is an important and valid work? Of course I do!
>In Canada, the federal government estimates the annual cost of violence against women at $1.1 billion in direct medical costs alone. That figure rises to more than $4 billion a year when social services, lost productivity, lost earnings, and police, court, and prison costs are factored in.
Wars usually produce large numbers of refugees: witness the United Nations camps scattered around the world. And the War on Women has its own refugee camps, in the form of the 2,500 or so shelters for battered women and their children across North America.
In the United States, more than 300,000 women and children seek safety in shelters each year. In Canada, the number is between 90,000 and 100,000. <<
DO I THINK THAT GENITAL MUTILATION IN CANADA PERFORMED UNDER THE EUPHEMISM OF LABIAPLASTY AND SEXUAL REASSIGNMENT OUGHT TO STOP OR BE MORE CAREFULLY CONTROLLED? Of course I do. Furthermore, plastic surgery has its legitimate uses, but much of it is about the coercion of largely women to conform to standards which are psycholigically and physically harmful to girls, women and society. Lit 200 of course finds nothing wrong with these goings on in her own society. Better to condemn others in far off places and ignore the home front is Lit's approach.

My comments on the Hungarians who came in 1956 is based upon personal experience. Two of them, one now dead, were among my close friends. One of them worked in the mines, odd jobs and as a porter on the CPR. He was, and still is, a chess master of middling acclaim. He became a teacher and taught, and was much respected by, Canadian kids in a small town in BC. The other became a much sought-after tradesman, joined a union and became president of a regional chapter, arguing for better working conditions. Strangely, three that I met and knew became recognized statisticians - Statistics Canada was once jocularly said to be run by the "Hungrian mafia." Four others practiced and taught engineering, one of them contributing to the then-new technology used in the CanadaArm.
Were they paragons? Of course not. But as a group they were high-functioning and contributed strongly to the betterment of Canada and I KNOW they were committed to making a life WITHIN the fabric of Canada as they found it. Not surprisingly, none that I knew wanted to return to Hungary after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
So my knowledge of Hungarians in Canada comes not from books or history lessons - both of which in this case seem to me to be horribly biased - but from personal experience.
The exodus of wealthy and criminal immigrants from Hong Kong is a completely different thing and there can be no question that this sudden influx into the lower mainland had and is having deleterious impacts.
Maybe it's a karma payback for the exploitation of Chinese coolies who slaved on the CPR line through the Rocky Mountains up to 1885.
